JimmyT
I'm sure most girls would like linux, because most of them don't play games, except solitaire and minesweeper. Most of the guys on the contrary, like playing games, and couldn't live without WoW or Doom3 or HL2 or ___ (put any game you like there), thus couldn't live using Linux and playing Mahjong or Hexen. Sooo.... Linux is made for girls :p (j/k) My point is: I like linux, but I like playing games more. I would only install linux in an office, not in my home computer. My sister would prefer to have linux, because she's only using her pc for browsing and writing emails.
h3xis
I m half way with my conversion :-DBeen using both Linux and Windows (i have two PCs on my desk) The only thing stopping me from switching is that i play a lot of windows-only games. Did anyone try Cedega? How does it perform? 585826540 cedega's garbage. i got a hold of it from a friend and tried to run diablo ii, warcraft 3, quake 3, age of empires set, and more using it. it'll load the little cinematic intro for all of them but then choke and crash. i had the latest and correct drivers installed as well. cedega itself isn't even free. you have to sign up for some stupid "club" thing they've got going on. thechitowncubs
Update: no problems so far and i asked her what she liked best she said "It's so cool that it already has everything on here for you!" she burned a cd by herself, added all her music to Rhythmbox, used Evolution, and LimeWire
markwolfe Veteran Posted April 26, 2005 Veteran Share Posted April 26, 2005 ^^^ Cool. Linux isn't difficult to use. It is different in some ways. And, it can be a pain to get configured correctly for some hardware, but when it is installed, it runs like a champ. (Y)

LaNcom
One thing that obviously needs to be repeated in every thread as soon as Ubuntu comes up: Ubuntu uses Gnome as it's desktop. If you prefer/ want to try KDE instead, get Kubuntu - it's the same OS but comes with KDE instead of Gnome: http://www.kubuntu.org http://shots.osdir.com/slideshows/slidesho...ase=306&slide=1 <- Kubuntu (KDE) screenshots http://shots.osdir.com/slideshows/slidesho...ase=305&slide=1 <- Ubuntu (Gnome) screenshots
JimmyT
JimmyT,WoW and HL? work perfectly on Linux using Cedega or Wine (Wine has some problems with HL?), Doom? is available for Linux, Doom?:RoE for Linux should be out very soon: http://zerowing.idsoftware.com http://www.transgaming.org/archives/000021.html http://www.winehq.org/?issue=262#DirectX%2...and%20HalfLife2 585827258 Woo:)o :) The bad thing is: I've tried many times to use Wine, but I failed every single time! I can only use notepad there. I can't install anything on linux or on wine. I need somebody who knows linux to sit down and teach:(e :( Or a good book. I always manage to destroy my linux installation in a week or less than a week, and I can't ever repair it. LaNcom
JimmyT, don't really know what your problem is, but reagarding games on Wine, there's a new Wine developer (Oliver Stieber), who works on DirectX9 these days - and his work is really impressive: to quote a recent post (by Oliver, from two days ago) from wine-devel: [...] Between moving I've managed to get a lot more DirectX 9 work done, Roller coster tycoon, Warhammer 40K, tenage mutat ninja turtles and the increadables are now the same under WINE as Windows. Evil genius, Kohan 2 and Axis and Allies have a few graphics problems but are still playable and colin McRea raley 2004 now plays ok, but there are lot of graphics issues. i expect Settlers Heritige of the King and Myst 4 will work but I haven't been able to test since I lost the demo disk. hopefully the problems with Halflife2 and world of warcraft are fixed, but again I don't have coppies to test.
