gamerdan1
Has anyone noticed that Opera 8 only clears its memory cache if you minimize it or your computer becomes low on memory? I have it set to hold 20 MB in memory but it will continue to go higher and higher with every page I visit. I had it as high as 70 MB with just google opened! I know there is an issue with Gmail that people have been talking about, but I don't use Gmail.

omensik
yes i have done all that, but still a problem. 585833487 I have the same problem. My comp. Pentium II, 128 MB is QUITE slow after 5 pages opened in Opera!
worbd
Actually, it is Windows which swaps it to disk. It happens to all programs if you minimize them.

This is one feature of Windows that bugs the **** out of me, and wish there was an option to turn it off.

A useful tip is to open "My Computer" and minimize it if explorer starts to use too much memory.
kizzaaa
I have the same problem. My comp. Pentium II, 128 MB is QUITE slow after 5 pages opened in Opera! 585833567 I use to have a similar PC. To fix that problem change the memory cache to 4MB and restart Opera. You'll notice a difference.

A useful tip is to open "My Computer" and minimize it if explorer starts to use too much memory. 585837836 But it still uses memory.. it's just put on disk temporarily until you need Explorer again. And next time you use explorer, you'll notice it is quite slow for a bit until it loads things back into memory. If you really have such a problem with low memory than you gotta minimize stuff to make room, you should either (a) Not run so many things at once, and close them when you don't need it at the moment (b) Buy more memory!!! Pink Floyd Veteran Posted May 3, 2005 Veteran Share Posted May 3, 2005 my opera usually takes twice the amount of memory that Firefox does but that wont make me switch back to firefox because of the aount of ram we have these days
megamanXplosion
Opera does use a bit of memory by default. Opera stores the browsing history, cache, skin, typed in addresses, visited addresses, e-mails, etc. in memory so everything is blazingly fast when you need to use them. I think that this is a benefit over Firefox because memory is there to make things faster, not for programs to needlessly leave empty when it degrades performance. But, If you find that Opera may be using too much memory then you can go to Preferences (Alt+P) -> History -> and change the amount of memory it uses for cache. And yes, swapping to the memory to disk is the result of Windows itself.
boobless
Try this: turn off automatic memory cache. In opera6.ini under insert this line Turbo Mode=0.

You'll notice a difference. 585866493 I've used 4MB for a while now, anyway. I mean, isn't the memory cache only used for the ability to re-open closed pages? I can still open a hell of a lot of pages with 4MB.
