supernova_00
At 8:58 AM PST this morning, we rolled over the 50,000,000 line. Thanks to the hundreds of you who have regaled us with your heartwarming and often hilarious tales of spreading Firefox. They said browsers were dead. They said open source would never penetrate the mainstream. But you've never cared much for rules, have you? And now we're blazing a trail to 50 million downloads worldwide. As we turn open source into a household word and reassert the supremacy of simplicity, we are making waves?and starting fires. We've spent long nights in a tiny conference room here in Mountain View trying to figure out how to celebrate this momentous occasion. Should we lower Mitchell, our fearless president, into an erupting volcano? Send her backpacking through the Alps? In the end, we decided we'd rather celebrate by rewarding those who got us here. And that's you. We have a handful of unique prizes that you won't find anywhere else, and we're asking you to do one simple thing to claim one: impress us. As we drive toward 50 million downloads, do something so cool, so unusual and so spectacular to spread Firefox that we can't help but scurry around the Mozilla Foundation to tell every one. Send a photo of your feat to fifty@spreadfirefox.com. So what impresses us? Maybe it's convincing your mayor to declare a Firefox holiday (take a picture of the declaration). Or going to the prom dressed as a Firefox (take a picture of your date slapping you). We'll keep a running log of the prize winners and their stories below. The sky's the limit, but the clock's ticking. Source...Worth taking a look at for the weird ways people have helped spread Firefox

+M2Ys4U Subscriber¹ Posted April 30, 2005 Subscriber¹ Share Posted April 30, 2005 Is the 50 million downloads just from mozilla's servers or every server that serves Firefox? 585851205 It's from all of the official Mozilla mirrors

drshdw
Firefox is slow and a memory hog on my 900mhz computer. =\. But...I don't see IE or Opera 8 being slow, so obviously it isn't my computer. Damn you slow Firefox! If it wasn't so slow I'd use it.

Denis W. Veteran Posted May 2, 2005 Veteran Share Posted May 2, 2005 About slow.. explain then why it takes Firefox 10+ seconds to load on an old 333 MHZ Celeron PC. And it's less than 3 seconds for IE. (Yes, I know, IE has most of its components loaded with Windows.) As for the 50 million mark, good for Firefox. Although the people blindly loving Firefox should chill out for a bit and quit bashing other browsers like Opera which are just as good, if not, a bit better. This browser isn't god like, you know. I think before you go trashing the safest and fastest browser available, You first might want to buy a computer that isnt 8 years old and slow in the first place. And as far as Opera and IE loading faster, its because the core of both browsers are ancient. They were originally designed to work on a slow computer and remain in memory even when they are closed. On new computers, all three of them load in about the same time.

Orange Battery
I have to say for a long time I would always reply to any threads asking about what browser I used saying IE6 and wouldn't change. I had some problems with internet explorer early this year so downloaded firefox and actually took the time to get to know it and it has so many little bits I find useful that I cant go back. Its great.
Denis W. Veteran Posted May 2, 2005 Veteran Share Posted May 2, 2005 (edited) If you already know, then why are you asking? Just to be an ass? We get it - you like Opera, congratulations. 585858713 Idiot, just for the record I have all three browsers - Firefox, IE, and Opera on my system - and like each for their own uses. (IE for stuff related to Microsoft, Firefox for most of my browsing, and sometimes Opera for a few sites that don't render correctly in Firefox - yes that does happen). I'm only talking about slow since I have used Firefox on older systems and it's visibly slower and a bit laggy. I'm currently using Firefox on a system that handles it well (except for smooth scrolling for some cases). One such example: using Portable Firefox on the school systems. It's fine for the 2.8 GHZ Dell PCs, but the 333 MHZ systems taht make up 60% of all the systems in the school, they take nearly 10-20 seconds before Firefox displays. I think before you go trashing the safest and fastest browser available, Safe? Yes. The safest? No. And no I'm not trashing it, if it was the case why am I writing the post within Firefox right now? its because the core of both browsers are ancient. Well let's see, Opera 8 was out only last week, or a few weeks ago.. so I assume nothing was done to its rendering engine? [
Those numbers, are they really right? Doesn't seem right to me. I downloaded FF1.0, 1.01, 1.02, 1.03. How does that add up? So it could be 1/3 of ~10%?!
+M2Ys4U Subscriber¹ Posted May 2, 2005 Subscriber¹ Share Posted May 2, 2005 yes, the numbers are correct. And don't be mistaken.. this is the total number of downloads since 9th November (when 1.0 final was released)
