Blue and red, red has oxygen and other crap in it and blue is going back to your lungs to get oxygen and noroom nice pic=D Church all the way

Yeh horse-shoe crabs have blue blood, even when it hits oxygen. It has fantastic medical properties which are being looked into - I can't remember much about the documentary I saw ages ago, but it was great.

Horse-shoe crabs have been around since the dinosaurs, even before from memory, fascninating little things, you should google them, it will be a good read.

Human blood is blue till it hits oxygen then turns red.

I thought this was common knowledge?! LOL

Why does everyone say that blood is blue?

Disproved in 4 easy steps:

1) Blood, through Hemoglobin, carries oxygen. When it has oxygen, it is a shade of red, from bright red(lots) to dark red, maroonish, even slightly purplish(little)

2) Blood ALWAYS has oxygen when pumping through your body, the same way your lungs always have air in them, even when you breath out. Even when returning to your heart and lungs for more oxygen and to be repumped, it still has some in it.

3) Because of the color of your veins, and varying colors of skin, the returning blood is made to look varying shades of blue. If you ever see a layer of skin held up to the light, it's vaguely translucent(looks kinda cool, actually), and things behind it are warped in color.

4) Ta-da!

ya, its red. i loved to get asked that question, tell them its red, then to hear back, noo, its blue. it just turns red when oxygen hits it. i would be like, umm, doesnt blood carry oxygen throughout your body? so since it has oxygen already in it, its red. they would just respond with, naa its blue.

What if u cut urself underwater by your heart and let oxyenited water get to so that you wouldnt need to breath. you also made it so you wouldnt bleed to death LOL wouldnt work but it would be cool

Blood's obviously blue until it reaches the air and becomes red.

i think a lot of people's confusion lies in the fact that many diagrams of the circulatory system show oxygenated blood as RED and deoxygenated blood as BLUE. this a complete oversimplification but it's done to help distinguish between them. as said by others, it's never blue, but the shade of red does change.

Obviously you people are too caught up in all the intelligence of when it gets into atmosphere and changes color and when youre dead it changes as well and all that. Im sure in general your blood currently is red. If you dont believe that then go check yourself. :D

when the blood is in the body it is blue.. once exposed to oxygen it turns red, i studied this in physical education and was on my exam so don't say im bull****ting lol

I was taught red blood cells + oxygen = red, red blood cells - oxygen = blue

Red blood cells turn blue because they start to die when they don't have oxygen. Therefore you can never test and catch blood off guard (mostly) because once it comes in contact with oxygen it turns red again.

Also fyi blood gets oxygenated in the lungs and then pumped by the heart to wherever.

(oh and the reason why blood is still red when they take it from you is beacuse the oxygen is not being used)

Quick Biology course:

Even when blood is heading back to the heart to be pumped through the pulmonary arteries to be reoxygenated, it's still a dark shade of red. When blood comes in contact with oxygen, it is captured by hemoglobin (which is a protein) in the blood, which gives it it's red colouration.

In our bodies, the blood is pumped through the pulmonary arteries to the lungs. In the lungs, gas exchange ocurrs, during which carbon dioxide (attached to hemoglobin and desolved in our blood as carbonic acid) is released and oxygen is captured. The oxygenated blood then flows back to the heart through the pulmonary vein. The heart then pumps the blood to different parts of the body. When the blood reaches it's destination, the oxygen is released, and absorbed by the cells for use in cellular respiration. The cells also release carbon dioxide, a bi-product to cellular respiration. This is absorbed by the blood in a few different ways. Even with less oxygen, this blood still has a red colour. This is then moved through veins back to the heart by skeletal muscles in out body.

The reason blood in veins looks blue is because the tissue surrounding veins has a translucent property to it that gives it a blue appearance (think like a wet paper towel, it has a semi-trasparent look that kinda resembles blue).

I don't believe how many people can be so wrong. Take a syringe and get a bit of blood. Is it blue? Don't think so.

Blood is blue... stupidest thing I heard in a long time except this one guy that said the air is blue because it has tiny blue particles in it. :/
