WASHINGTON - Navy officials said Monday that two F-18 fighter jets apparently were involved in an "air-to-air collision" over southern Iraq. There was no immediate word on the fate of the crew members.

The officials, who spoke with NBC News on condition of anonymity, said there was "no initial indication that hostile fire" contributed to the loss of the U.S. Marine F/A-18 Hornet aircraft.

The fighter jets, based on the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, were reported missing at 10:10 p.m. local time.

A statement by the military in Iraq said search efforts were under way and that the status of the crew members was unknown.

NBC News producer Scott Foster contributed to this report.

Thats really strange. They have tons of technology to prevent that, and could even be avoided by using the most basic radar system in case their whole command network goes down.

The pilots were reportedly wearing night-vision goggles while flying, so seeing as how cumbersome those are (can't imagine how one could fly and wear them at the same time), the end results aren't surprising.

/hey, I don't write the news, this is just what I heard on the news

This is the trouble with the amount of lies/propaganda put out by the US government - you don't know whether they actually collided, or whether they were shot down and it is a cover. Either way it doesn't look particularly good for the US.

Do you honestly believe that we'd cover it up if in fact another country (presumably a hostile one) shot down 2 of our aircraft? That sort of incident would give the US another reason to bomb the **** out of them.

Accidents happen all of the time (in the military).

I'll believe this story if a non US media source can report on this.

many years ago 2 747's collided, that was something

I believe that is/was the worst airline disaster in history. 2 fully loaded 747's collided (on the ground no less) on the Canary Islands. 1 was taxiing on the ground and veered onto the runway where another was in the landing cycle. Something to the tune of roughly 600 dead.

/chock full of useless trivia and knowledge

Wow, what are the odds of something like this happening? I mean the sky is a BIG place.?:

Yes, it seems odd, but flight have restricted airspace they're allowed to fly in, which puts one limit on where they can fly, and their routes put another limit. If there's one bit of misinformation/misunderstanding from traffic control the results can be fatal. There's some general information about it here, among others on military airspace, shedding some light on the complexity.
