Iran: Nose Job Capital Of World

(CBS) Iran's strict Islamic dress code has backfired in at least one big way.

Some young Iranian women are more obsessed with their appearance than their counterparts in the West.

And, as CBS News Correspondent Elizabeth Palmer reports, they're lining up in record number to improve on the look nature gave them with cosmetic surgery.

The most popular form of plastic surgery in America is liposuction, but in Iran, where the female form is kept largely under wraps, women prefer to spend their money where they can show it off.

So Iran, where the morality police used to confiscate eyeliner and lip gloss, is now the nose job capital of the world.

"A Western nose is more beautiful," says one young woman in Farsi.

At a medical center, where a group of women wait for their friend to come out of surgery, portraits of classical Iranian beauties hang on the wall. But the Persian nose, it seems, is out of style.

Inside the operating room, Dr. Hossein Heidar lifts and shortens.

"The hot look," he says, is inspired by Hollywood.

Women shopping for new noses, Heidar says, arrive with photos of Jennifer Lopez.

A picture perfect nose costs around $1,500.

Photographer Newsha Tavakolian is planning a book on Iranian women. The nose craze, she says, started with satellite TV from the West.

"Everyone saw how the Western women, they have very small nose and look almost like Barbie, and the Iranian women, they see them and they say, 'Oh, I want to look like them,'" says Tavakolian. "They want to make their nose small."

But it's not only women. There are lots of bandaged men on the streets too.

"Iranians in general have big noses and that's one of the reasons why this surgery is so popular," says Ali Bahrami in Farsi.

Bahrami insists he had the operation for medical purposes, but the before and after pictures tell a different story.

And best of all, Heidar says, all this nipping and tucking is not un-Islamic.

"Plastic surgery is better appearance for people, and I think God like this," he says.

Just thought this was kinda funny while I was doing some research for a paper.

Yeah...I do notice that Iranian girls have a certain kind of nose.

Its just the mainstream definition of pretty ;). Who knows maybe god thinks the 'ugly' people are pretty and thats why there are so many :o (heh don't know for sure but considering the new trends and **** for plastic surgery I assume everyone thinks thier ugly?)

Well...I should add that to my "reasons God doesnt exist" list.

According to that guy, God is cool with you altering the way he created you...right...I see. Has absolutely nothing to do with us being a species with varying degrees of sexual selection.

Sorry buddy but the mainstream definition of pretty is symmetrical and proportional features, etc. People in Iran tend to fall apart in the proportion part of that equation, albeit many of them are genetically supposed to have "western" noses because Persians are crossbred with Europeans. (as a result, many of them tend to look down at Arabs, who have no Euro blood)

I like your thinking with the God stuff but its the classic scientific bell curve going on there.

I'm saying that its becoming clear to us, some of us at least, that people are pretty to varying degrees because of genetic variation. The prettiest almost always survive, while the ugly ones have to try harder and mate with their own, etc.

Also that guy quoted is showing how ridiculous and man-originated religion is because a god in the classical sense would not allow for his creation to be tampered with like that. It even goes more against science since if we can alter our faces, we can alter the gene pool to a significant degree.

Nah just didn't get the following bit:

I was just confused by the way you worded that bit :p, I thought you were trying to rubbish the idea that God would be cool with doctors fiddling with the appearance of people, not trying to semi rubbish the idea of God :p

We can't really make massive statements about the amount of ugly/pretty people can we? Even though there are certain patterns that can be seen in relation to facial features it isn't completely possible to account for other variables. Surely its more complicated than just having 'eu' genes?

Even though 'pretty' women may get partners would they create more babies? Currently there is a massive push towards looking pretty... having children is linked to losing your figure and various other side effects which detract from 'prettiness'. If ugly women are already ugly wouldn't it be possible that they wouldn't mind having lots of children, therefore passing on thier 'ugly' genes and as a result creating more 'ugly' people?

When you say "The prettiest almost always survive" do you mean survive and procreate thus passing on thier genes, or do you mean just survive?

Yep. Changing your appearance through surgery would do that. You know...like when if you were to marry this girl that was a 8 before you found out she made herself that from a 6 with some facial changes, nose, eyes, etc. Then yeah, your children wouldnt come out so cute...but then again, you could always just send them to Dr. Whatever to fix that nose or whatnot. i guess the whole gene pool thing wouldnt matter much...hmmm. I wonder if we would have to ask women in the future...um...is that your nose or...?

Haha, oh well. guess I'm lucky to be living in a time when surgery is out of reach for most people, exercise is more important, and girls actually take care of themselves.

And yes, I mean the prettiest almost always survive AND to pass on their genes. Nature has made it easy for pretty people. In fact, a study showed last year that men who were judged to be more attractive to women ended up having healthier sperm on average...proving that nature is working to help pretty people all the time.
