California to Ban Internet Hunting

Recommended Posts

SACRAMENTO, California (AP) -- Wildlife regulators took the first step Tuesday to bar hunters from using the Internet to shoot animals, responding to a Texas Web site that planned to let users fire at real game with the click of a mouse.

The Fish and Game Commission ordered wildlife officials to prepare emergency regulations to ban the practice. A period of public comment will follow.

"We don't think Californians should be able to hunt sitting at their computers at home," said Steve Martarano, a spokesman for the state Department of Fish and Game.

A bill passed by the state Senate two weeks ago would prohibit use of computer-assisted hunting sites and ban the import or export of any animal killed using computer-assisted hunting. The measure now moves to the state Assembly.

At least 14 other states and Congress are considering similar bills.

Groups including the California Sportsmen's Association, Safari Club International and the Outdoor Sportsman's Coalition of California support the ban, saying hunting over the Internet is unethical and unsporting.

Supporters have suggested the remote hunting could be beneficial for hunters with disabilities and questioned why Californians should be barred from patronizing a legitimate Texas business.

I saw an interview with the guy who came up with this and he said it was for handicapped people who couldn't walk. I still say it's a dumb idea and I'm glad they banned it.

I dont understand why people are calling Californians nuts over this issue. They're stopping what is basically a ridiculous practice.

The people who's sanity is to be questioned is the Texans who started this business in the first place. Saw it on television awhile ago, they have blinds with rifles on tripods connected to the company's computers. They showed a busy executive logging on, taking aim and killing a deer. And yet they argue that videogames desensitize the public, how much more can you get than a system that allows you to actually kill something online.

i'm glad they're banning it. it's senseless.

of course, considering that one would be shooting through an online portal, i don't think it really matters to them whether or not a REAL animal were shot. they should make the whole enterprise virtual.

Nah, this isn't what makes me say California is nuts. I don't have a problem with this practice being banned. It's more the rest of the things that happen in Cali... :ninja:

What does that have to do with the price of rhubarb?

I can't find a reference to Arizona in the article. I don't know if you are from Arizona or if that it a veiled attack on another member in this thread that is from Arizona but that comment seems to be nothing more than off-topic SPAM. Let's try to be a bit more mature.

haha god...I'm glad they are banning this. I hate that handicapped hunters can't hunt in real life but this is just simply dangerous.

Well, as a hunter I have to say that while no real self respecting hunter would do this, I don't see it any worse than organized hunts that basically put you right on top of your kill. I do also know of a wheelchair bound hunter who could benefit from this.

Aside from just blanket deriding of the activity, what are all of your detailed objections? Are you just opposed to hunting in general?

I think there are fears that it could lead to cold-hard killers. It takes away the reality of death and makes taking an animal's life a little too much like a game.
