Honolulu police on Friday closed a missing person's case after a KHON2 news crew found the woman in Moiliili. According to the missing person report, 46-year-old Karen Nakanishi had been missing since April 17.

Friends at two Makiki churches had been looking for her since then, especially after she failed to show up for a Las Vegas vacation.

"I've been calling at various times of the day -- like early in the morning, nighttime, afternoon and nothing whatsoever," said longtime friend Lorna Soong early Friday afternoon.

Soong said a church member saw someone that looked like Nakanishi at Stadium Park in Moiliili. While the KHON2 news crew was shooting video of the park for the story, the reporter spotted Nakanishi.

Police later confirmed the woman was Nakanishi using a driver's license.

Nakanishi told KHON2 that she wanted to apologize to those who were looking for her but she "just wanted to get away for a little while."

Friends are now offering her a place to stay, even though Nakanishi has her own apartment.

"While it's been hard - it's been hard like this ... I don't know, I feel better," Nakanishi said. "My head feels clearer, actually. ... It's just a long story."

KHON2 is the island's #1 news station, so this report will just boot their ego through the rough.

she "just wanted to get away for a little while."

I know how she feels.

It's typical that people will go (even more) out of their way to find you when all you want is to get away for a little bit.

She shouldn't leave for a whole month.

Agreed - especially without notifying anyone. It's understandable that you may want to just get away from things but at least tell people close to you that you're leaving for a bit.
