Fred Derf Veteran Posted May 11, 2005 Veteran Share Posted May 11, 2005 Dr. Aitken said, however, that scholars now believe the number in question has very little to do the devil. It was actually a complicated numerical riddle in Greek, meant to represent someone's name, she said."It's a number puzzle -- the majority opinion seems to be that it refers to [the Roman emperor] Nero." Revelation was actually a thinly disguised political tract, with the names of those being criticized changed to numbers to protect the authors and early Christians from reprisals. "It's a very political document," Dr. Aitken said. "It's a critique of the politics and society of the Roman empire, but it's written in coded language and riddles." 585903572 I think lav-chan's brought up the most interesting point in this thread. I don't have much patience for those that read the bible literally. The reason why the bible is the single greatest piece of literature on this earth is that everything in the bible has multiple meanings. Some people choose to only deal with the most pedestrian meanings. Miracle this, miracle that. I have similar discern for the study of numerology. Clearly you have to believe in a certain outcome and then selectively pick and choose the available facts to suit that outcome.
Toastyone
MTV News, great source... 585900691 If you want a better source The Independent had an artical about it on May first, MTV is a little late with the news :p Link: http://news.independent.co.uk/uk/this_brit...sp?story=634679

Galley
Iron Maiden taught me that 666 was "the number of the beast". That's good enough for me!
alsheron
There is no scapegoat...we are the beast, and you are a part of it. We are also the "Allmighty." The only "being" greater than us is our creator, and it isn't a god in our disgusting image. It likely has no feelings and won't care about you, either. It's just a force that continues and mystifies by changing constantly... 585904227 Interesting comments, but i dont agree with the tone of your post. It seems to belie a very negative view of The Creator, who is, incidentally known as The Most Merciful, The Compassionate. These are known attributes of our Lord
PermaSt0ne
For me, i have to ask, where's the benefit either to myself or to society/others. In this there is no benefit other than the entertainment value of "knowing something no-one else knows" and having therefore, some kind of "power" or "superiority". 585903710 or OR it COULD be.........lets say........NEWS. a lot of people find this stuff interesting, while as others don't. you could find a ton of people to look at what you find interesting and say the same exact thing ! ! you read the title of the post, so hush up and either read the article or don't as for you........ I've read a book where in one chapter that guy discusses some numbers that refer to total annihilation and stuff like Earth changing its north pole location. Numbers like 666, 6666, 999, 9999 and etc come along. 6666 is very interesting for instance. The circumference of Earth (~40000) devided by 6 is ~6666. Devil's Mountain in States is 6666 km away from the North Pole, and so is the Great Pyramid in Egypt. A mountain in Tibet or that area has a shape of a pyramid and is 6666 meters in height. I can't remember all, but there was some kind of triangular regularity between all those location leading to North Pole shifting and its next location, which is the Devil's Mountain. Well, there was much more.. will have to look that book up. 585903978 you can do that with ANY number in the world about anything. it's not special at all. oh and who said anything about 6666? only 666 is being talked about. having four 6's in a row means nothing. anyways, i will be very interested to see what the outcome of this will be. will some cults change the number they worship? how will the media use it..........very interesting stuff here thanks for the news

But if you actually read my reply then you should have noticed I said, "for instance". And the guy I replied to, said he was interested in this kinda stuff. As far as 6666 not meaning something, well, then you should look things up before saying anything. For once, and before anything, I am not religious, Koran contains 6666 verses. In the bible there're 657 verses (New Testament) with word Lord, and 6009 in Old Testament, totalling 6666. To some, number 6666 sybolizes Satan's legions. And as far as 616, then some say it's the number of knowledge and 666 is the opposite of it. And 616 being a number of the beast or not debate dates back thousands years ago... so not really anything new here, just because MTV posts it, it gets attention.
