tonicx
I removed adblocks about a month ago, ever since I started my site, that's when I realized how harmful is adblock (or any ad blocking software, but not popup blocking though) to the internet. If you like your favorite website or forum and want it to last, you better show some support by clicking on some of the ads. PS. A small google text ad only uses a few bytes of your cheap bandwidth. ponytail
Neobond, this is a great site, and until I can afford to become a subscriber, I'll deal with the adverts. ( I even click through the more interesting ones I notice :o )
+StevoFC MVC Posted May 12, 2005 MVC Share Posted May 12, 2005 Thanks guys, I just heat up when theres talk of blocking ads on Neowin when we never abuse the fact we have them. We remove annoying ads and ones that have sounds are not permitted into our ad agreements. The most ad displays here are from Google Text-Ads which even intgrate into the design a bit. 585910335 i agree with you that it is stupid to block ads, and i never will. but as you keep saying, the majority of the ads are google adsense. and if you have no intention of clicking them blocking it makes no difference at all. Toxikk Veteran Posted May 12, 2005 Veteran Share Posted May 12, 2005 we have always done our best to remove annoying ads in attempts that peeps will not block them and actually help out the site by lending a few clicks here and there. if you see an ad that you think doesnt fit, you know what to do and it will be taken care of. its not like we do it to torture you guys. :)

Gelob
Neowin doesnt do pop-ups, unders or flash ads that take over your screen and still people think blocking a standard banner is ok, well you suck and don't contribute at all while we put a lot of effort into keeping this site online. Some people are so dumb I could just give up, yeah really 585910100 I like the new sig. Toxikk Veteran Posted May 12, 2005 Veteran Share Posted May 12, 2005 toxikk do you know how much a month it costs to run neowin? 585910896 i dont have any current info, but you would freak if you saw the amount of data and stuff we move around. its insane. well see if we can release some of that data... but in the meantime - just remember that by blocking ads you are ultimately going to degrade your experience here at neowin. i hate ads just as much as you all do but have learned that they are real valuable when it comes to being used for the *right* reasons. i think that when you see some of the stuff we have planned you will really understand exactly where it helps and will be glad you were able to help out. example: as steve mentioned... a 4th server. :o  ADS RULE! Vice
You pay a cable company and get tv commercials. You pay an automobile dealer and still pay for gas. 585910333 except Adblock is like recording every TV show to TiVo and fast forwarding the ads or buying a car that can take water instead of pricey gasoline. Adblock is a way of life the site promotes firefox what can ya do.. its a good exstention. I don't personally block Neowin advertisements any more and I click them now and again but only because I use Neowin allot and I have not subscribed (yet) so I don't Block them. I could do more I guess.
....
i got warned once for saying that...go figure. 585910195 Then I'll warn the owner of this site to make you feel better. Perspective, please. The ads help neowin. If you block them and use the site, it's almost like never paying for shareware that you use all the time.

This is what I have been saying for months. I hope we get some of these idiots to post here... Here is a link to a thread where I argued the case for roughly the 30th time: https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=313779&st=30 The guy there said a similar thing to what I currently have quoted in my signature. I know. I pay to connect to my ISP, and that's all. This was said countless times, too, but is a sad reality: if a website can't keep itself up without tons of ad, then it's not a website I'd care of. I pay for my bandwith. They pay to expose contents. Nobody is giving us charity. 585903865 There is other crap like that on the thread I linked to. TheDogsBed
but i wont have people having a go at me because i choose not to look at ads. 585910287 Especially when you can bet your life at least one of those who get so judgemental on you also block them. I've never hidden from the fact that I block all ads. I appreciate that running a site costs money, though with respect, I see it as you must have known this when you started it. And let's be honest, if you closed up shop tomorrow, every visitor would find a new haunt before the ink was dry on the "We've closed" message. 'tis the way of the net... People are loyal until that loyalty hits their pocket. 187 Subscribers out of the entire Neowin Membership echoes that point without any explanation needed. They want this community, they want to be able to promote all the stuff they make for free, yet they aren't willing to sit and look at a few measely unobtrusive ads. KC
The ads are so unobtrusive at Neowin, that I forget they are even on the site, and never click. I remember one day I typed www.neowin.net into my browser only to see a message stating that Neowin was closing, because of DDOS attacks. I remember when there were NO ads, I even remember when there were POP-UP ads. What about when Neowin was hosted for free by Invison? I remember lots of stuff about this site that I bet over the half of the people boo hooing about ads never even knew happened. Its total crap to come here and see people posting one smiley, its crap to come here and see trolls, its crap seeing a lot of things on this site but, it really makes my blood boil though, when I see people bragging about ad blocking Neowin ads, or just throwing a fit because one small unobtrusive ad, at the bottom of the page, got added. These people come here, entertain themselves looking at desktops, or reading jokes, help themselves by asking questions and letting the community help them, they do all of this on some one else?s dime. The Mods don't get paid, the coders don't get paid, the news posters don't get paid, and I am pretty sure that the Admins don't get paid either. Get real, your lucky you have this site, your lucky your still here.
Tomi
I currently use adblock, I never see ads. But once adblocks gets a white list feature, I'm definately going to add Neowin onto the white list and click on ads often. And also, as soon as I'm going to buy a subscription as soon as I have a method of paying. :)

ember
Man, even I click on a few ads through out the day - and I more than put in my fair share to support the site.It is so simple really. I use firefox, so I just middle click all ad links that I see and the pop up in an unfocused tab. Piece of cake, then I close them out. 585910196 yeap, thats exactly what i do (Y)
Odyssey
I don't mind the ads at all; I like being able to give something back to Neowin since I visit it so often. Clicking on a few ads and subscribing is the least I can do.
cyoung1616
I think all of us subscribers should pick someone out and buy them a subscription. If we all did that we could add over 200 paying members. If the new subscribers would then turn around as soon as they could and do the same, soon we would have money for tons of goodies and not have to worry about depending on ads for as much support. This may be a stupid idea but I think that is what I'll do. I'm not going to post who I'm going to buy it for and I need to figure out how to do the paying to Neowin in case someone doesn't have pay pal, but I'm sure I can get Admin to help out with that. If the person I sponsor wants to tell he got a subscription from a subscriber thats up to them but as for myself I would perfer they not name me as the subscriber as I may do this more than once. Don't PM or email asking for this as I will pick out the person myself. If this isn't allowed or if Admin thinks this is a bad idea, please PM me about it. Thanks.
