Wall Collapse Snarls NYC Traffic

Recommended Posts

(CBS/AP) A retaining wall collapsed along the Henry Hudson Parkway in Upper Manhattan Thursday afternoon, snarling traffic throughout the area as rush hour approached.

There were no immediate reports of injuries. Maria Lamberti, a fire department spokeswoman, said personnel were called to the area near Riverside Drive and 181st Street at 4 p.m.

The collapse and subsequent slide of dirt and debris down a steep slope and onto the roadway below has shut down the Henry Hudson Parkway in both directions. Aerial views of the scene show at least two lanes covered in displaced land.

The heavily traveled parkway is completely blocked in the northbound lanes, just past the George Washington Bridge overpass. Southbound lanes of the Hudson Parkway have also been shut down by local authorities as a precaution and so emergency vehicles can access the area.

New York City officials say the massive retaining wall came apart just after 4 p.m. and emergency crews are mounting a commander center to begin looking for possible motorists trapped under the dirt and debris.

The roadway is covered all the way across with trees, dirt and huge blocks of concrete that used to be the retaining wall
