Firefox AdBlock users want to help neowin?

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I'm posting this because I found a custom AdBlock extention for firefox which you can add a whitelist to allow ads to be displayed

Why I'm using this version instead of the original? Yes, like you I hate ads but this custom version let me display hated ads within neowin so I can clic once in a while to help them to keep the 3 and the 4th servers comming soon!

Why? simply because neowin is by far my favorite website I visit everyday for many years now.

How the whitelist works is simple. Just add @@ in front of a site. Like @@*neowin.net/*

This way, you will allow any ads on neowin site

Here are the link to the Firefox extentions:

Original AdBlock website

Custom AdBlock website (whitelist) to install directly: Version with icon in your statusbar Version with text in your statusbar

I personally use the icon version which is cuter IMO

You can read and have more infos on the official extention mirror list!

Now enjoy!

What about those of us that use HOSTS files? Is adblock anything like this? I've been using firefox+updated hosts file (+firewall+AV) and have had 0 pop-ups, spyware, adware etc... So while I support the idea, i'm a little weary of changing a system that has worked very well for me. As it is now, i would need to know every ad server neowin uses and ever will use, and remove them manually from the hosts file.

(PS if anyone wants to post a list of servers neowin uses for ads, i will go edit away right now)

Just remove ads.neowin.net from the hosts file. (its the only one they use that I know of)

ok, i added @@*neowin.net/* and all it has done is block every image here, it isnt working as a whitelist of any kind.

works for me but only for certain ads. one of the only ones that gets through is the windows marketplace one

ForeverUnknown - Initial .5.5 was a bit buggy and whitelists added would act as regular filters until Firefox was restarted. Fixed in .5.6, which is now available.

We're also working on localizations, and a bit more streamlining.

Note that whitelisting supports regex just like regular Adblock filters, and that it is a simple negation - whitelisting "@@neowin.net" is probably more effective than "@@*neowin.net/*", as the preceding and trailing "*" are implied, and removing the trailing slash will allow advertising scripts that contain "neowin.net" to run.

Hope this helps!

  • 1 month later...

Just letting you guys know that white filters like "@@neowin.net" just work the opposite to black filters. The ad has to match "neowin.net" for it not to be blocked. The next version 0.5.8 will come with an option called Site Whitelisting where if the URL of the site matches the white filter then all ads on the site are passed.

If you would like to support neowin.net but don't want to see the ads then in Adblock you can select to "hide" the ads instead of "remove" them. This just means the ads will be downloaded but not displayed and will be recorded by the site as being viewed, which is where part of the advertising revenue comes from. There is also another new feature coming in 0.5.8 which will allow you to hide ads on a per site basis instead of globally. You will find it in a new location under "Adblock's Options" menu called "Support Websites".
