Gmail problems with Opera

Recommended Posts

Please take a look at the screenshots taken with IE and Opera, the rich formatting options don't show in Opera. Is there a workaround to this problem

I believe it may require ActiveX.

Which is not supported by Opera

Below is a link that points to a similar discussion about Hotmail's formatting toolbar...

There is no workaround that is worth using. The only thing I can think of would be installing an ActiveX plugin but that comes with some major security problems and the benefits it provides is not worth the risk. You'll just have to wait for Opera to implement some form of rich-text editing capabilities...

Why does it work in Firefox then if it needs Active-X?

because it doesn't need activex. It does need some complicated technology(It took Mozilla years to get this running) wich Opera does not support at the moment.

I think that there might be another issue regarding this. I wonder if the Opera user that has the problem is identifying his browser as Opera or as Internet Explorer. I say this because it is well know that in Opera it is very simple to change your User-Agent string.

iCeFuSiOn: Gmail uses ActiveX for Internet Explorer and MIDAS for Gecko. Neither implementation is standardized and both implementations suck. Opera doesn't support either one. I'm hoping that Opera and Mozilla work together with the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) to create a decent implementation of RTF that could be standardized...

jedrzej: correct.

adinu79: It has nothing to do with the user-agent string. You might be able to get the toolbar to show up through the use of user-agent strings but you'll never get it to actually work.

Bingo. I had the same problem a while ago. Youre using v8 right?

Opera lacks rich-formatting. There's nothing that can be done until Opera implements it, which won't happen for a while as it is a low priority for them.

I don't think rich-text formatting is a low priority for them :)

http://www.whatwg.org/specs/web-apps/current-work/#editing

As you can see, that is a working draft for upcoming technologies and Opera is a main contributor to it. The section I linked to points to the "Editing" section that includes a mention of the "contenteditable" attribute. The way they seem to have it implemented should allow the same editing capabilities as Internet Explorer (if not more powerful) but it will also be standardized, secure, and accessible to people with physical disabilities. So far, this implementation will blow the ActiveX, Midas, and Java implementations of rich-text formatting out of the water.

The reason Opera hasn't implemented rich-text formatting is because there's no standardized way for it to be accomplished. Once the working draft above gets promoted to a recommended status and gets support by the World Wide Web Consortium (which I'm confident it will), they will begin implementing it. It may be a year or more before that specification gets standardized, but it will be worth the wait :)

The Opera Gmail issue has been around for a while. In fact, it usually gives you a message on the top that "you're not using a full-supported browser..."

AFAIK opera doesn't support any rich text formatting. It's a bit inconventent.

I think OPERA is the best browser nowdays. And it does not need any Gmail support.

I'm waiting for IE7, but I don't think it will be better than Opera 8 :D

Choose Opera

It used to do that, but now Opera is a supported browser, it just doesn't have that one feature.

I believe this has to do with not loging into the secure https version. Does part of the address bar turn yellow? What url are you using to goto gmail.

Ignore they rubbish I just typed :)

Gmails autocomplete only works once per session, if you want to use it more than once you will have to clear your cache file.
