You can Make Firefox even safer now

Recommended Posts

There's a browser safer than Firefox...

...it is Firefox, with NoScript!

NoScript provides extra protection for your Mozilla Firefox browser: this extension allows JavaScript execution only for trusted domains of your choice (e.g. your home-banking web site).

This whitelist based pre-emptive script blocking approach prevents exploitation of security vulnerabilities (known and even not known yet!) with no loss of functionality...

You can enable JavaScript execution for sites you trust with a simple left-click on the NoScript status bar icon (look at the picture), or using the contextual menu, for easier operation in popup statusbar-less dialog.

Staying safe has never been so easy!. Experts will agree: Firefox is really safer with NoScript :-)

I use this and it really works very well. It also works on the latest nightly builds. There is a couple of security vulnerabilities that have to do with javascript. And this extension helps prevent them.

Edit: Aug 9,2005

I haven't updated this in a while, and there is some really awesome stuff in this newer version so I thought I would update this thread.

v 1.1.1

=====================================================================

x Fixed a bug with whitelist synchronization from the Options window

x Fixed little Spanish locale issue

v 1.1.0

=====================================================================

+ Customizable message position, top or bottom (new default)

+ Customizable audio sample for feedback

+ (Firefox only) Advanced options to forbid Java?, Flash? and other

plugins (Java? forbidden by default, since many users don't

know the difference between Java and JavaScript))

+ Advanced options to allow rich-text clipboard on trusted sites

+ Portoguese translation (thanks to Dario Ornelas)

x New (less ambiguous) "partially allowed" icon

x Audio feedback off by default

x Statusbar icon hidden status persists across sessions

x Proper jar: scheme handling (will allow per-domain selection when

Firefox bug preventing it is patched -

  see https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=298823)

x jar: scheme can be allowed only temporarily (see above)

x No more browser activity stop after permission changes

Javascript is talked about a little bit here. Its what some sites use to make a website more interactive..but it can also be used for bad things, like exploits.

Yeah... that would make you safer, then again, it would also cause a HUGE headache because you have to constantly add sites to the list to make them work. Blocking javascript is going too far. Half the sites you visit wont work when you block javascript... at least half. Just don't be stupid and you have nothing to worry about.

Now... speaking of, that reminds me that this laptop needs to be upgraded to 1.04. Don't use it very much :p I'm curious why the auto update hasn't kicked in.

I disagree... while you are right that lots of sites use javascript. Most will function without it just fine. I know cause I always have run with it disabled. Some functions of the site might not work. For example in this forum the Clickable smiles use javascript. But it's not that big a deal really. And the last and most extreme (to date) vulnerability in Firefox was using javascript to exploit it. So, disabling it isn't a bad idea and for sure isn't going "too far".

Edit: And how long does it take to do a right click on a icon and enable a site. It's a lot better/faster then how I had to do it before.

So is this browser safer than Firefox or does it still use the Gecko engine?

Edit: Doesn't work. I click download and all it does is take me to the flashgot.com website.

Too big and slow? Dude, are you running a 486/66?

Buggy? The JVM doesn't run badly at all... and for the reasons that MOST people use javascript (to create DHTML - for styling) I hardly think it'll hurt...

MHO of course...

We are not talking about Java here, we are talking about JavaScript, it doesn't need the JVM, and it isn't slow.

Java on the other hand, is slow as hell, and buggy.

Have to click on getit on the left. Here is the link.

It's an extension for Firefox.

@CrisCr0ss: I don't know about Java, but if you meant javascript then this extension also tells you how many scripts a site used/or tried to use.

hehe.. Just voice your opinion in a respectful way. Lots of people here do that with no problems. I have even disagreed with staff, but I keep it respectful. And of course within the rules.

Okay.... Here is MY OPINION and knowledge. I have been using IE for agesand never EVER once had a virus, trojan, worm, or anything like that. THEN i hear people say, WTF!!!! IE hac2ed My MAcHINE! SCREW IE! and then I think, maybe its the user, because as i stated before, ive never ever had any trouble with ie, n im plan to stick with it. Im not anti ff, im just saying........ maybe some of you guys visit dodgy sites...

I used IE for a couple of years before Firefox and I have NEVER had a virus either. But I did have a lot of spyware that activeX allows on. I always had to use anti spyware software. And I tested it out too, it wasn't bad sites doing it. I would run the anti spyware software and clean it all up then I would visit only well known sites then close IE go back and use the spyware removing software again and sure enough.. it had a lot added back on. All in a few minuties of using IE. I'm hoping they fix that in the new version. But I like Firefox for a lot more then just not allowing spyware anymore. It's way way more then that. But I will test out the IE7 when it comes out.

I have said that myself many times. "each to their own" I'm not one of those that thinks everyone SHOULD or MUST use Firefox. I only don't like it when untrue things are said about it. But that happens to IE and Opera too. I just don't know as much about them.
