sphere
i believe you will only be able to use one sound card at a time. if you go to control panel > sound and audio devices > then the audio tab, you will see that you can choose which device to use. from that, it looks like you can only use one device (sound card) at one time. however, it looks like you can use each sound card for different purposes. ie. 1 sound card for wave and 1 sound card for midi etc... spyderman450
I don't think its even possible having 2 sound cards in the same computer.

fenixDG
Back in the days of my SBLive I used to have a cheap Fortissimo card in as well (to get round the VIA problems I had back then). From what I remember only the card set as primary in the Sound/Multimedia control panel gets used. Some programs/games let you select the sound card themselves but most use whatever windows has set as the primary playback device. In that time I never encountered a program which could use both cards at the same time. The exception is as sphere says. You can have one doing the MIDI playback while another handles WAVE. Just make your selections in the control panel.
atomb
actually i've seen it done where both sound cards worked at the same time. my best friend had some digital dj software that would allow you to use each sound card for individual tracks. was pretty cool, we hooked both cards up to a mixer, on separate channels. it was same idea as 2 turntables and mixer. it was much harder tring to mix mp3's from a computer then mixing records. Computers are a bit smarter than you're giving them credit for. How do you think most people run multi-monitor displays? Anyway, I had two sound cards in my PC at one time before. Just like everyone else said, you can divide between one having wave and another having midi - as well as selecting what sound card to get microphone input from, but that's around about all you can do without 3rd party software.
