HDD Not reading all space

Recommended Posts

i have a maxtor 40gb 7200rpm hdd, it was mostly filled with misc stuff, and some movies i had downloaded, one of the movies wouldnt delete after i viewed it and had rebooted a few times, i got tired of it not deleting and tried to format the drive, half way through it gave me an error formatting, then i rebooted and tried reformating it a number of times, finally i went to the component services in xp and went through all the steps to get the hdd working and it finally did, but theres 9 gigs missing seeing it only reads 31.85gb and not 40 (actually around 39.1 if i can remember) but anyways, theres space missing, is there any programs that could recover the missing hard drive space? all the ones that came with xp only see it as 31.85gb, thanks

get a boot disk and do an fdisk and see if there are any partitions you dont know about

or even better, (is using XP) righ click on my computer and go to manage, then go to disk management, it should tell you what is in that space, i think you can even enlarge the partition too (i think)

Windows 2000 and XP Cannot Create FAT32 Paritions 32GB+ you must use NTFS.

or just create two fat32 partitions.

eh, I suggest using NTFS, its better than FAT32, in Large Drives. in many ways than just 1. I've totaly boycotted FAT32 on any of my drives doesn't matter what size they are big or small.

But there is other factors, 1. does he need access in dos? 2. Is he dual booting with an OS that can't read ntfs? and many more...

So as so many always says NTFS is best it may not be best for everyone.:p
