Hum
NEW YORK (CNN/Money) ? Pride aside, it really doesn't matter how much you make, just so long as it goes a long way where you live. Therein lies the rub for all those who seek glory and glamour ? or just decent housing and a drink -- in the most fabled places. A new report from Salary.com looks at the relationship between salaries and the cost of living in 188 large metropolitan areas across the country to see where the gainfully employed can live and eat and still pad their bank accounts. The living costs measured in the new Salary Value Index include housing, food, transportation, utilities and state taxes. The index also factors in an area's employment and job-growth rates. What it does not account for are quality-of-life issues, such as culture, school systems and the weather. So, financially speaking, the top 10 places where you'll get the most mileage out of your paycheck are: * New London, Conn. * Huntsville, Ala. * Baltimore * Harrisburg, Pa. * Tulsa, Okla. * Rock Island, Ill. * Troy, N.Y. * Corpus Christi, Texas * Schenectady, N.Y. * Las Vegas, NevLas Vegas :huh:huh: more: http://money.cnn.com/2005/05/23/pf/pay_cos...dex.htm?cnn=yes

M1K3L
Wow... Huntsville, Ala... Hmm.. I don't live far from there at all, but I'm also not far from Mobile, Ala. Cost of living where I am isn't bad.. You can get a decent place for under $100,000, and if you look hard enough, even under $50,000. I found a decent little place I wouldn't mind having, even has a swimming pool, for $39,000 :-) Wish my credit cards were paid off and I had some spare money. lav-chan
I was born in Rock Island. THE GEH-HETTO. And Davenport is so much better. :/ The Mid-west has a lot of places where life is cheap. Iowa has a lower sales tax and (in the less-populated parts of the state) lower housing costs than Illinois, and South Dakota has lower sales tax and lower housing costs than either of them. Plus South Dakota doesn't even have an income tax. LIFE IS GOOD.
John Veteran Posted June 1, 2005 Veteran Share Posted June 1, 2005 Psh, Moline is better than Davenport :p The City of Davenport is too focused on spending millions on the riverfront and doesn't put enough money into better, more needed programs. lav-chan
I'll tell you why i don't like Moline. (a) The air port. (b) The people who work at Subway there are ass holes. Davenport is :rad: as long as you don't live in the ghetto. Riverfront i don't care about, they have a cool downtown and the apartments are hot. And if you live a little north, like in Le Claire (most adorable town ever) it's even better. And, i mean, if you ever wanted to go to Rock Island or Moline, say if you needed a birth certificate for the DMV or you wanted to go see hard-core kids dance funny at the UAW Hall, it's just across the... you know... bridge... deal. Thing.
Matt
houston, tx has the cheapest real estate out of all the major metropolitan cities. its by far the cheapest "city" to live in compared to chicago, ny, la, etc.
kombolcha
i'm not surprised at tall to see that most of them are in Eastern US. if weather was a factor, i doubt those cities would be listed.
anthony
Las Vegas ??? Yea, in Las Vegas most people don't realize, you've got a free place to stay, (most casinos are open 24/7), you've got free drinks, and if your lucky you can double or triple your money. Your money can go far in Las Vegas, or right down the tubes.
