zi0nx5
aaaaaahhhhhhhh..... i just found out and i think it's been like this for a long while now. For a while (like for months) I've been noticing vid jerkiness when the 3D WinXP screensaver is on... thought at first it was just the drivers but now i found that the stock fan on my vid card doesn't work at all!! i've got a VisionTek GeForce 3 Ti200 (XTASY 6564)... anybody have any solutions to this?? the heatsink/fan are secured by both punch-through klips (wutever they're called) AND adhesive bonded to the GPU... i tried prying it off but think its WAY too risky. 1) i need a temporary solution to this for the mean time like an external fan placed on top of the dead fan (read #2) 2) i'll need to either pop the plastic plug from the middle of the fan to put in some oil or, somehow, pop the entire heatsink (PROBLEM IS, IS THAT THE FAN IS REALL REALLY REALLY REALLY STIFF, TURNING IT MANUALLY WITH YER FINGER IS EVEN A LITTLE HARD). PLEEEEAAASEE.... i need advice NOW please. Thanks :ermm:
underscorebios
Usually fans are screwed to the heatsink, just unscrew/unplug it and screw in a new one if that's your case ;)
zi0nx5
no its actually adhesive bonded between the GPU and the heatsink.. which is unusual since there's already two push-klips that go through two holes in the actual vid card
YahoKa
Pull hard, and apply some arctic silver and a new heat sink. I doubt they used thermal adhesive if it was screwed in. Don't do somthing dumb like add oil to your current fan...
zi0nx5
well that's the thing i'm really worried about if i pull hard cuz my friend told me that some ppl have pulled hard and the entire GPU came out right with the heatsink/fan
KeR
use a knife of something to separate it.....
Sidespike
Ok I have the same card so here we go. Oh and by the way I am on my 3rd fan from visiontech, just got last one in the mail from them on thursday. Ok removal of old heatsink: Pop up the pins on each corner and with a butter knife and a thin piece of cardboard under knife and pry up, with little force, under each corner and it will pop off, you will not hurt it. Trust me I have done it. Plus you might want to try to twist the butter knife in the corners also. Goto www.visiontek.com and goto support and send them an email with your shipping info and what is wrong and within a day or 2 you will get an email telling you your fan has been shipped. ok I think I covered it all, if not email me or PM me with other questions. I have been down this road Sidespike

Sidespike
ah shucks :cheeky: Glad I could help :) Oh and to remove the crap underneath heatsink on the chip itself use a cutip and nail polish remover and to finish it off, to put new heatsink on, use rubbing alcohol and compressed air to dry it off and also to remove and dust or peices of cotton. Then stick on heatsink and put the pin in and connect wire and bingo like brand new :) Sidespike
ramesees
Could the same problem be affecting my Elsa GeForce 2 Mx-400 card? Ever time I use it in my XP box the graphics revert to the windows default (4 bit) mode, and the message in the system properties is that my card couldn't start. System works fine with my Riva TNT2 card, and was wondering if it was the card that is the problem? Any thoughts on the matter would be appreciated
zi0nx5
thanks again... i just sent in a request through the support form... had to put "not needed" in the technical fields... should've just sent an email :paranoid:

ramesees
Originally posted by zi0nx5 u get new drivers off of windows update? Yes I have, the 28.32 WHQL from the windows update site, and the 29.42 WHQL drivers from nVidias site, none of them are able to fix the problem. The card may be damaged, but I gave it to my friend to try for a few weeks and he reported no problems, so it could be XP I can live with my TNT2 card until August when SP1 is released then its a case of formatting and reinstalling with SP1. That should address the XP problem as it'll be a new install. It could be the sound card, as I heard from another friend that the GeForce 2 MX-400 caused a conflict with my Soundblaster Live! card. What does anyone else think? If it is the soundcard then I can just get a different one
divinatum
zi0nx5: why stick with OEM fans.. get a tube of AS3 and a Blue Orb and ur as good as new ;)
zi0nx5
GeForce3 werking fine now... i actually had a spare BlueOrb lying around my room so rather than waiting fo rthe stock fan to come in the mail i just popped the old one off and put the Orb on. i used arctic silver rather than the generic thermal paste that came w/ the Orb.. thanks sidepsike again for tips on removing the d@mn heatsink! ;)
AaronXP
I've got a ATI Radeon 64mb DDR, and think the fan's going a bit dodgy. Its spinning, but its making horrible loud noises somtimes. When I hold on to the gfx card I'm getting violent vibrations from it. Any suggestions? Someone told me to put a bit of general purpose oil in the fan, but someone up the thread said thats dumb. zi0nx5
do what i did and go buy a Thermaltake BLue or Orange Orb if u can find it... AND MAKE SURE IT ACTUALLY FITS! also go get some arctic silver compound rather than slapping a thermal pad on there (i've been told its waaay better, of course i knew that though ) ;) www.directron.com is a good place to buy online FYI
cris4tay
My brand new ABIT Geforce 4 ti4200 siluro's Fan died after 3 days.............. I'm not kidding it mad a really bad grinding noise then when the noise stopped I checked it out and it wasn't working..... I was ****ed so I couldn't wait for the replacement in the mail so I put a new 40mm fan on it .... it runs cooler now by a few degrees......... but, I still want my replacement fan seeing how the card is now only 4 days old........ What bothers me is that ABIT sent me a auto response e-mail saying they may not respond to my e-mail because they are too busy........ I don't like that response at all............... Sidespike
Glad I could help zi0nx5. I might just switch to the Blue ORb. How does it fit on our board?
zi0nx5
i originally bought the Blue ORB to put on my mobo's northbridge chip but it didn't fit at all... though the ORB fits perfectly on the GeForce3. The ORB, i think, was made specifically for vid cards and may have just happened to fit on SOME motherboards. i'm also using the black push-klips that came with the GeForce3 with the Blue ORB. not sure if the push-kilps from the ORB packaging works on the vid card but probably would I JUST CHECKED and the Blue ORB is working very good. the fins are barely warm and the center of the fan isn't too hot either. :p
