icetohot
TORONTO - A Canadian province will shut its 24-hour suicide hotline and replace it with one that operates only during business hours. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7981128/

skase
if your calling the suicide hotline, your not actully gonna commit 585978007 Well not unless your planning to use the phone to strangle yourself. Its there to help heavily depressed people during bad times in there lives. It would be a very stressful job. And it does save some peoples lives, it depends on the individual. SaLiVa
I wish there were just "depression" hotlines. When you just need someone to talk to you know... We dont have this kind of service in our region, but there's no need.
skase
i say it cuz i was thereive used the hotline... 585978030 I mean there is a point with a person with sucidal intentions, where they will attempt to seek help and they wont. I dont mean any offence.
Ateoto
For the people saying "If you call it, you're not really gonna commit suicide": I've called one of these hotlines before, because I was concerned about my friend. One of the main functions of these hotlines is to give information to concerned friends, families, or loved ones. They give you information about how to talk to someone about it, and how to get them the help they need.
Brodel
why dont they just outsource it to another province?

zhangm Supervisor Posted May 29, 2005 Supervisor Share Posted May 29, 2005 Wow, the government gives absolutely no thought to how much cash they can milk from saving a few people? Think of the tax money, for god's sake! Oh, and the people too.
xxpor
Exactly, they will get that amount in taxes, from probably 1, if not 2 people. :(
Snipe
I had 2 cousins committ suicide over the past few years, both were spur of the moment - no notes left. I seriously doubt calling a hotline ever entered their minds. I am sure this is the same with many suicides.

We dont have this kind of service in our region, but there's no need. 585978050 I totally agree... On another note, I remember school teachers constantly affirming "Depression is nothing to laugh at... it's a serious illness and people have a hard time with it"... I was the type of kid who would laugh at that... ... until the dark shadows of depression loomed over me. I'd never wish despression on anyone because of my own experiences. Depression IS nothing to laugh at. I wish I had someone to talk to too. I know I wouldn't have waited to place my call within the 9-5 window. Bad call Toronto... DrunkenMaster
why dont they just outsource it to another province? 585978140 My thought exactly. The problem is that bureacracies do not support working together. Budgets have to be kept separately, blah, blah. Since its probably funded provincially, another province won't pitch in. Frankly, if someone commits suicide its more a fedearl problem. They should just have 3 or 4 call centers on a national level instead.
Fred Derf Veteran Posted June 5, 2005 Veteran Share Posted June 5, 2005 why dont they just outsource it to another province? 585978140 That would seem to make sense but... politics gets involved. Politicians and the beurocrats that work for them are good at anticipating embarrassing events that could harm the minster. Assuming that PEI could outsource the job to New Brunswick: Say there is a regional or national crisis. Another Quebec referrendum, Canada losing a hockey tournament, Celine Dion announcing an Atlantic tour, whatever... What if the nightime suicide lines became jammed and someone from NB couldn't get through because several people from PEI were on the line. What if that NB person committed suicide? It would all be trajically embarrising to people in NB that agreed to take calls from PEI.
DrunkenMaster
Celine Dion announcing an Atlantic tour, whatever... 586019844 I don't think many things would make me commit suicide, but the Celine Dion thing yeah.
