ACE vs ZIP

Question

Can anyone explain me why we all still use ZIP when much much better compression is available with ACE or RAR???

Just recently I dowloaded a 95mb ZIP file in 50min ,

once downloaded I optimized (extract and compress) it to ACE format which resulted in a 70mb ACE file, thats a huge diffrence

I even noticed that sometimes the ACE files are only 40% in size than the ZIP format , so why do we use ZIP????

'The code libraries for zip are FREE'

Read and understand.

Did I say applications based on zip were free? No.

Go to the Infozip website and read about zip compression.

From the lzip website

5. What are the benefits?

Numerous; numerous. The size factor, obviously, is a prime benefit. But on a deeper level, using lossy compression to manage your files is a way to learn something about yourself. You will most likely experience a feeling of euphoria or lightheadedness as you watch your free disk space cascade upwards to 100%. You will become bolder, have increased stamina, and adrenaline may make you temporarily impervious to pain. You may also gain a new appreciation for backup devices (this has been widely reported among the developers).

lol... A new appriciation for backup devices :p
Lossy compression has benefits that extend well beyond day-to-day file management. Our short list includes: permanent (irretrievable) archiving; ultra-high speed transfers over existing network lines, and high-security "steganographic" storage of sensitive information.

Permanent archiving

Well, if retrival time isn't important you could store it in /dev/null and then retrive it from /dev/random :)

I recently wanted to download a file from a newsgroup (A free game for my C=64 emulator) and it was in .7z format. I did a search on google and found that it is a new compression format called 7-Zip. They claim the best compression rate, but I had to install it anyway to get my file. It will decompress most types such as RAR ZIP ACE, etc.
