Old PSU enough for XP 2000+?

Recommended Posts

I'm going to buy an xp 2000+ with a gigabyte 7xdr+ mobo, and I was wondering if I'd be needing a new PSU. Dont know what brand the one I have now is, buts its 300W, and its currently in the pc with the AMD Athlon 1GHz. Will this PSU do or do I need more W's?

Thanks.

It should be enough but if you have a lot of cards/drives a 350W or 431W one wouldn't hurt. If you do decide to buy a new drive, Enermax make good quality stuff.

hmm, well heres another question. how many of you reading this are using a 300W PSU with any AMD XP cpu? hehe, probably most of you have a 350W or above.

Workstation:

CPU: AMD Athlon XP 1900+

Mobo: MSI K7N420-D Pro (nForce)

HD: Maxtor 7200rpm 30gig

GFX: ATi Radeon 8500LE 128meg

PSU: Generic 300W

Server:

CPU: AMD Athlon 1400

Mobo: Abit KG7-RAID

HDs: 2x 80gig Maxtor 7200rpm (RAID 0), 1x 60gig Quantum 7200rpm, 1x Seagate 6gig, 1x Seagate 3gig (Backup)

GFX: Matrox Mystique 4meg

2 Coolermaster case fans

PSU: Generic 300W

No complaints from either system, and the server has a lot of sh*t attached to it as you can see. 300W should be fine :)

300 watt is just fine (as the others have attested to) but if you think you might need more (ie. If you have every pci slot filled, tons of usb devices, lights, both ide chains filled and possibly raid - you get the picture) get a 400watt.

Btw, anyone know of a company who sells a good powersupply w/ dual fans (front & back), 400 watts, and 6 molexs (power adapters)?

The PSU that came with my Antec case was a 300 w/ 3 seperate lines of adapters (6 molexes, 2 floppy adapters) but my 400 only has 5 molexes, 1 floppy. I've got a bunch of customizations that require molexes and I hate Y-Adapter'ing. Help? :(
