i'd keep using it, if they find you (depending on if they are technical people, some wont EVER find out) then just play dumb like "i thought internet came with the pc" or something, its impossible as we know, but just pretend to be an idiot.

say you will stop using it and that will be that. but i doubt they will catch you.

haha...if they're not smart enough to secure it, than they're not smart enough to find out....

Don't keep using it and pay for your own and go tell them to secure their own damn internet...

There is no standard "default network" you just happen to be in range of someone else wireless access point.

if you're getting a strong connection, they it's someone who is beside you...just knock on their door and explain the situation, I'm sure they will appreciate it...

I can pick up 3 wireless networks in my house.

I don't bother using them though. Got my own locked down vey tight.

I'd help them secure the network but they haven't asked :)

Nope. Your connecting off your neighbours....... and is illegal and not safe

Utter bollocks.

Yes, it's your neighbours, by default a WinXP installation will pick up any wireless network and automatically use it if it's not been secured.

There are no laws about using a unsecure wireless network, as such you are inviting other users to share - no different than shared bands on a CB Radio.

I'd say keep using it, but learn a few network skills and make sure your PC can't be accessed via the same network from your neighbour, you might also be also able to log onto his PC (now you are walking into a legal minefield).

Oh, and use a GOOD firewall, like Zone Alarm so they don't get your network shares.

Congrats on the free 'net connection, now use it to download goat porn. Only kidding.

BTW: I use MAC addressing on my router, just in case, you can't turst encryption now-a-days. If you haven't got the right MAC address you ain't getting in.

You will find, if you do a google search for "War Driving" that it is indeed illegal to go around and use other people's wireless connections without their concent. Although, war driving is mainly for using other people's wireless network connections to downloed over P2P, it does cover normal internet activity too. Because, technically, you ARE stealing their bandwidth.

Man, Use your Free Internet, Idiots don't have a clue to say it's legal or not cause they should secure the network every month ( some people do it every week ), I think those guys didn't secured their network as it needs engineers with high wages to secure their network every month...

1- use Zone Alarm ( Network : Internet NOT Trusted )

2- change your IP every week ( less is better )

3- Use XPAntiSpy and Hide your PC from the network ...

4- Use Iris if you feel that you are being monitored or if you feel that you ****ing the connection alone ;)

5- and for sure disable all your sharing stuff .

Now I think it's 5% chance to catch you

It?s funny to find this here 'cause I'm in the exact same situation. About 2 months ago I moved in to a new apartment and 2 weeks after I turned my wireless on and found a network with ssid "Wireless" lol. Connected and got internet just like that. Still using it right now. And the thing is, I know where it's coming from... not neighbours but a cable tv store beneath me. It goes at about ~30k/s, very nice considering it's free.
