Woman Discovers $3,000 In A Two Dollar Garage Sale Find

(Omaha, Neb. -AP, May 30, 2005) ? Linda Stafford has been going to garage sales for 30 years, and taking good-natured ribbing from her family all the while.

Now, the tables have turned.

Stafford has found more than $3,000 in bills dating from 1928 to 1953 in the bottom of a high-backed chair she bought at a garage sale - for two bucks.

"When we found the money, they could probably hear us screaming all over the neighborhood," said Stafford, 57.

She made the discovery while trying to make room in her garage for more furniture. When one of her daughters, Mandy Rath, heard something rattle in the chair, they removed the bottom. Placed inside a compartment were two paper packets, one with $10 in coins, the other with $3,060 in bills.

Stafford remembers what she paid for the chair, but not where she bought it.

"I know that I've had it out in our garage for at least a year, maybe two," she said.

But, Stafford was not sure how she would spend the money.

"Who knows?" she said. "I might spend it all at garage sales."

Ok....spend it on more garage sales?..:huh:h: I'd either save it or put it to go use towards something thats worth buying:shifty:y:

About 12 to 18 months ago there was a story here in New York city about a couch that was put on the curb (tenants had moved out and landlord was cleaning the place) Inside the couch was $7 million in cocaine. Id say that beats the $3000, but imagine trying to sell that much off.... someone would be wanting that couch!

Ive got a hiding place or two of my own in my house at my dads where I keep some valuables and some emergency funds, but its not something I would go off forgetting about.

My g/f (a thrift store lover) has bought jackets and purses that still had money in them.

Same with my mom. She goes to the salvation army and yard sales every weekend to buy clothes to re-sell on ebay and she finds all sorts of stuff in the pockets. She's made quite a lot of money re-selling, too.

it was probably some old person's hiding place, they must've passed on before they managed to tell their family what was in there. still a cool find though

Real simple. From the dates on the bills 1928-1953, my guess is that if it was honestly

put there, you are probably looking at someone who lost money in the bank collapse,

caused by the stock market crash of 1929, and the depression that followed. I remember when I was a kid back in the 60's, my grandmother kept money in a pillow because she didn't trust banks. A lot of people back then tucked away money for several reasons. To save, and mostly because even though the FDIC (federal deposit insurance corporation) was implimented, a lot of people still didn't trust banks.

Probably because the motto was "backed and secured by the full faith of the US government" :D

They wouldn't sue anyway because....

Stafford remembers what she paid for the chair, but not where she bought it.

"I know that I've had it out in our garage for at least a year, maybe two," she said.

Over a year or more's worth of time, so their wouldn't really be anyway for the original owners of the chair too know, therefore they wouldn't be able to sue regardless. So its basically finders keepers. :D:D

...but if they read this story and they are still alive and remember, THATS MY MONEY!!, could be possible too..hmmmm..:shifty:y:

My dad bought a used book from a thrift store. He wasn't interested in the book just the "bookmark": a fully licenced copy of Windows XP Pro w/ serial number. And hey, it works! He paid for the book which was about $1.00.
