markwolfe Veteran Posted June 2, 2005 Veteran Share Posted June 2, 2005 Well, with the same IDC report source: http://www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS00153905 you can say that either "Windows wipes floor with Linux" or that "Linux drives worldwide server sales boom" The short story is that Windows has caught up to UNIX (which has growth, but below the market rate) and is reported as "statistically tied" with UNIX. Linux is a quickly-growing third place at 10.3% of market revenue. Market +13.5% Units +5.3% Revenue UNIX +5.0% Units +2.8% Revenue (34.4% Server Market Revenue) Windows +10.7% Units +12.3% Revenue (34.4% Server Market Revenue) Linux +31.1% Units +35.2% Revenue (10.3% Server Market Revenue) Red denotes growth below market rate (forgive the uneven spacing) Read for yourself and determine what spin you would put on it. GrandMaster
at this rate how many years until linux is #1 ?
markwolfe Veteran Posted June 2, 2005 Author Veteran Share Posted June 2, 2005 No one can really predict. However, it currently has 1/3 the share of Windows, but is growing at 3x the Windows rate. (and, according to the IDC report, it seems that Windows' unit growth is less than the market rate - so they are losing unit market share)
