Bandwidth Capper/Limiter

Question

Howdi lads... i have a situation.. need ur expertise

I am currently paying 25 english pounds a month (think thats about 40 dollars... not sure tho) for a 512kb Broadband Internet Connection... My sister shares this across our LAN @ home... she does not pay half of the monthly bill (apparently she needs to buy clothes every month! women.... )

Anyway my ISP: Blueyonder has just released 1Mbps Blueyonder... and while i am definietly going to get it my sister will not pay the extra 10 pounds a month they are charging... so i am think of when i get it in... installing an app to throttle the available bandwidth to her pc across the network... (e.g.: she gets 5k download and 5 upload... and i get the rest? are there any programs available that can do this?

ne thoughts would be very much appreciated peeps...

(btw dont bother sending any comments about me being nasty or evil... i dont care... im sick of her attitude)

l8rs lads

If you set up a proxy server that would be the only way. I believe Microsoft's ISA Server, which is the newest MS Proxy server has this capability along with reporting where the bandwidth is going.

she'll probably notice, and go back to the other speed since it was faster on her end. you want something? you pay for it, and don't be such a greedy $%@#$. it's notl ike ur sister stays up all night DLing huge files and wasting all ur bandwidth anyway. It's not her who has the attitude problem, it's you.

umm she's not paying crap, i'm surprised he's paying for her to surf. i'd let here use the lan over a 14.4k ;P

how is she gonna go back to the other speed if he pays for it?

WTF?!? I AM AMAZED BY UR BL00DY COMMENT!

Did u even read my post properly... She doesnt pay for any of it... she does stay up all night on msn messenger (spit!) and kazza download freakin videos of nstink and britney spears ffs!

I pay for it all... it my name on the bill... i think im entitled to be greedy... its mine in its entirity!

How can she go back to the other speed? i will be throttling the available bandwidth going to her pc from my pc (due to the fact that my pc is the proxy server) she wont be getting on my pc unless she hacks the registry to get all the passwords... and shes 2 stupid 2 know how 2 do that)

did u not read that last part of my original post:::::::::::::

"(btw dont bother sending any comments about me being nasty or evil... i dont care... im sick of her attitude)"

if u dont have something constructive 2 say dont say anything at all

CHEERS MATE!?!

Hey all,

I've got my LAN setup with 4 PCs running through a proxy server connected to a cable modem, is there anyway of limiting (capping?) the bandwidth available to each PC?

E.g - I have 1024kbps to play with from the cable modem, I want to be able to set it up like this:

Family PC - 64kbps max

2nd Family PC - 64kbps max

My PC - as much as possible!!

Basically because I pay for the internet access in my house, and i don't want my family stealing all my bandwidth!!

I'm using Wingate as the proxy server, if this is relevant!

thanks :D

wow i thought my cable connection was slow with 70k/sec down and 20k/sec up. sorry though i have no idea if theres a way to limit the bandwidth. I used to use wingate, but haven't been for a long time now. As far as I know when I last used it a couple years ago there was no way to limit the bandwidth with Wingate itself anyway.

I'd love to cut off my family's access - but they wouldn't be too happy with that and they'd prod me with sharp sticks until I turned it back on.

Not a nice thought.

i would cut her off... but im only 19 and its not my house so she would complain 2 my parents who would make me set her up again... i would leave home but house prices in uk are astronomical! lol

but i didn't cut your internet off!! :p

btw Dan - I have been told by someone on blueyonder.discussion.hi-speed (news group) that Sygate offers bandwidth limiting - I am looking into this now :) I'll post here with my results.

hell if you had a lil more money, perhaps you could look at some gateways that offer throttling. dont know of any in particular but just a thought. and it uses less power than having a pc be on all the time. good luck to you. id be greedy too but i live under my dad's roof. get cable (gone with the next price hike if any) and live under his rules. no gta3 :(:(:(

Trial for ISA Server is available at:

http://www.microsoft.com/isaserver/evaluat...ial/privacy.asp

ISA Server is nice because it also offers caching, ever download a file, then again on another PC a few minutes later because you are too lazy to put it on a network share, etc.? It will simply check that no newer version is available, and send you the cached version. It is a high end product, and the machine running the ISA server will have connectivity problems (not browsing the web but with other apps, but I'm sure I just need to look into it more to fix it) and make SURE you use the MS firewall client on the other PCs as it will open ports dynamically then.

Sounds like a bit too much effort for something so, well, not petty, I don't blame you for wanting to cap her, just, sounds like you just really need to talk to your folks or really have a go at your sister for how unfair she is being. Don't take this as advice, as I'm sure you've probably gone over those options, just felt like saying it.. :cross:

thanks for the link Tager, i gave that a go, but it didn't work :(

I've downloaded the Microsoft ISA Server software, I'm gonna try that out :)

keep the ideas rolling in! If we can find something that does this, I'm sure it will benefit more than just me :)

Come on now... with that much bandwidth there's no reason to get cheap about it.

I'd let my sister or anyone for that matter, if I had that much bandwidth for that low a price.

Geez... how much bandwidth does a person really need all to him/her self?

I let my girlfriend tap into my computer and use the bandwidth and I was on dial-up which only got as high as 48k on a 56k modem.
