Police Say Man Stealing Gas Used Lighter

THURMAN, N.Y. - A tip for would-be gasoline thieves. When stealing gas in the dark, don't use a lighter to see how you're doing. Police in Warren County say that's what Glen Germain Junior did when he was siphoning gas from a dump truck at a business in the Adirondacks last month.

The sheriff's department says Germain was transferring the fuel from the truck to a gas can when he used a lighter to see how full the container had become.

That sparked a fire that caused minor burns to his face and hands. The fire spread to a nearby forklift, which was destroyed in the blaze.

Germain has been charged with petit larceny and criminal mischief.

The arrest was Germain's second in a month for stealing gasoline from businesses in the town of Thurman, about 65 miles north of Albany.

haha. served him right.

What is really scary though is when i pop down the local shop, its a petrol station also. I see people walking off the forcourt smoking or talking on there phones.

There was one lady who was on the phone when i walked past her, while she was at a pump, when i walked back 20 mins later, still sitting there. I walked over to her and promted for her to stop using the phone, all i got was a horrible look!

They dont make it obvious enough :s

cellphones dont start those fires..proved on mythbusters....its the static that builds up in your clothes from rubbing aginst your seat then that shock usually starts the fire

no, cell phone signals can cause sparks definitely!

No, they can't. It's either the static electricity from getting in and out of the car or a malfuntioning battery. The signal nor the phone itself will cause gas to light.

No, Cellphones don't start fires. It was proven that its mostly females that start to pump and go sit back in the car to wait. The static from that sets the fire. And they proved it on Mythbusters like someone said.

Got to agree with you there, a show here in the UK called Brainiac tried this they put petrol all over the insides of this caravan then stuck about 10 phones inside the caravan all over it near the petrol (they was careful to make sure the metal contacts on the base of the phones was not touching any petrol) from a safe distance they then rang all the phones at once... and well nothing happened.

Then they put a very very small thin cable which was about 200feet long in the caravan in some petrol the other side a man standing inside a small plastic bucket wearing clothing that makes allot of static electricity jumped about and scuffed his clothes and stuff he then touched the cable and only a tiny tiny tiny spark hit the cable and boom the caravan instantly exploded.

There you have it. Phones don't do nothing.

How about this;

UK professor concludes: cellphones don?t cause gas station fires

edit:

And here this is from - Petroleum Equipment Institute

One hundred sixty-two reports (first-hand and NHTSA?s VOQs) have been received from 39 states --> &qNo cell phones were involved"

Seriously; if cell phones shot sparks out of them, would anyone hold them next to their head? I use my cell phone on purpose at gas stations just to see if I can provoke a dumb ass to say something to me.

Edit: Didn't that rumor start from a chain email?

yes they can cause sparks! (i think)

when you press a button or a switch you are making an electrical contact, as the contacts come close there is a small potental for electicity to jump between them thus causing a spark.

also the use of a cell phone can induce current in various other devices, which i suppose may cause a spark (hence why when you get a phonecall your phone makes a horrible noise on the speakers peritucaly if the network is gsm900)

hover that said due to the low voltages/currents used in cell phones its probably extremely unlikely that one will spark and cause the petrol/gasoline to ignite

never get whey they say that about cell phones after all what happens when you turn on your car engine?

There is no recorded incident of a cell phone ever causing any kind of problems at a gas pump. There was an article in Maxim about this (funny source haha) it was originally circulated as a chain letter and got around and the gas companies started putting up warnings for fear of lawsuits. It never happened.

Oh yeah and this guy is a moron :D
