whats my religion?

Recommended Posts

recently i was confronted with having to choose and think about my religion... i havent really though about it but, in away i beleive a god exists, but since i havent seen proof about it, and my mom knows about it and she thinks im wack. and that im goin to burn in hell for my way of thinking. but i beleive in both god exists, and the big bang theory. im an average 18 yr old american, but i dont know what kind of religion im into.. or what?

If you haven't committed to God existing or not existing, you could probably call yourself agnostic (which means either that you don't believe it's possible to know whether God exists or that you don't specifically possess that knowledge even if it is possible).

Otherwise, if you're really looking for a label for yourself (i don't know why you'd care either way, but whatever), i guess you'll just have to look at your beliefs and associate yourself with whatever religion is closest. If you believe that Jesus is the son of God, then you're probably some type of Christian, for example.

i'm not a christian, BUT you can still believe in the big bang theory, evolution, and believe in god regardless of what fundamentalists believe. you still have a long life to live (hopefully); you'll have plenty of time finding out what you believe. don't let anyone tell you what you need to be and what you don't need to be, only you can decide.

That's all fine and dandy. You can think whatever you want until you die. I really hope you're right because I know I am.

I'm a Christian in that I believe Jesus is God's son. However, beyond that, IMHO, everyone is different. Take for instance homosexuality. The church I attend has a certain viewpoint on this moral issue, but I hold another viewpoint. This doesn't make me non-Christian becuase I'm not perfectly complying with my church's perspective. My point to you is, you must first decide on the major beliefs. Google religion and you will have reading to do until next year :). I personally believe in the creation, but there is also undeniably strong evidence for some form of evolution. Then again, God must have given us this information, right? Anyway, Godspeed as you figure this out. He'll lead you in the right direction

The Catholic Church does not dispute scientifically known concepts like the Big Bang or Evolution.

I still withhold the right to pick and choose aspects of a religion as I see fit. I'm sorry but if I want to wear a little rubber thing (technically latex) then I'm bloody well going to go ahead and do that.

I know there is a master Vatican plan to create a whole world of Catholics by out-producing the other religions but I'll choose the size of my own family, thank you.

You dont need to 'pick' a religion if you ask me, just live you life. I respect peoples right to be religious, and respect what they stand for and believe in, but I also have my own take on religion as a whole. I think its mainly a method of control, because as you said your mum thinks you'll "burn in hell" for not believing entirely what she does. These kind of fears keep people from doing things they probably shouldnt anyway (which is a good thing), but some people also believe anyone who doesnt believe what they do is wrong (which is bad). I think utlimately you need to decide whats best for YOU, not anyone else, if your family and so forth really love and care about you, they wont let a book come between you.

PS: Does this belong in RWI? I think it would be more appropriate in Members Metropolis.

Religion is a hot-button issue that can make some people's blood boil (not unlike politics). This discussion has been very mature though.

We've also discussed evolution. That's another sure-fire RWI topic.

Yeah like the above post, you cant pick religion. Whatever you come across and agree with fullheartedly will suit you best. If somehow you disagree with some aspects of the religion but your heart rules for you to take that religion then by all means.

It's quite troublesome in this world where religion isn't as respected as before - Where most people believe in science above all. It's going to be really difficult to choose a religion.

I was born a Muslim, so the choice was made for me. Fate maybe? Or maybe just coincidence, or even just nature. I disagree with some traditional parts of Islam but still believe in the the root concept.

You can believe in God and if your mom thinks your whack, then I feel sorry for you. It's your own opinion and your mom puts it down. You can still believe in your own god just as long as you know the "right" god from the bad. Everyone has their own concept of God and it doesn't require a religion to believe. If you believe in something deeply then truth is just a matter of fact and will never get in the way of your beliefs.

1. you don't need to have a religion. it isn't a priori true that religion is necessary. hence, you don't need to be "into" any religion.

2. you need to study more. i mean, go out and explore the world. read as much literature as you can. you might find yourself agnostic. you might find that you're an atheist, or even a buddhist. no one can tell you what you believe in because we're not you. that's up to you to decide.

3. you're standing at a very interesting watershed moment in your life. you are free to form your own opinions without having to worry about other responsibilities (like work, bills, etc.). take this time (e.g. in some university courses) to see what you like and see what moves you. i went through a similar phase and i came out knowing exactly what i believed. if you've read any existentialist work, you will know what i mean.

I'm personally a deist. I'm registered a catholic, but I really don't get caught up in all the church stuff.

Deists basically believe that god exists, but that people are the ones that run the world. He is considered a "clockwatcher" and oversees the whole thing.

I hope that makes sense.

No, that describes me now. :D

I was born Baptist, but I don't go to church regularly. I occasionally go, like on christmas or sometimes during the summer when I am at my dads house (he lives in walking distance), but thats the only other time I will go.

One question: How do you become a "registered" Catholic? You mean Baptized or something?

You can register at your church and get the little donation envelopes that are personalized with your name on it.

Mind you, they'll deregister you if you don't pick up your envelopes for next year.
