Miran
Hey, I currently have a Maxtor D740X 80 gig hard drive, and I recently came across an IBM Deskstar 120 GXP 80 gig hard drive (my parents old drive crashed and this is the one they replaced it with) and I have the opportunity to switch my current drive with the new IBM drive. Now I know the IBM drive is a bit faster (10-15% I think) but after looking around on the net, I've seen some reports on the reliability of the previous generation of IBM drives (75GXP). Now, I guess there is a statement in the spec sheet for the drive that says it should ONLY BE RUN FOR 333 hours/month, which means about 11 hours/day. Now, my computer is on 24/7 all month.. My question is, does anyone have this drive? Does anyone have any experience with problems or issues and does anyone who has the drive run it all the time? Some people are saying the drives are fine for 24/7 and IBM only put the condition in to save a lawsuit (they are being sued for the reliability of the 75 GXP).. Any ideas, opinions, problems, or recommendations? Thanx alot, Craig

astrokat
Yea, GXP 75's are crappy. But I been using IBM drives for 4 years .. only had one problem. I also have a GXP120 120 gig and a GXP60 40 gig ,both seem pretty realiable. Check the spec sheets on the other models and see if you see a similar statement. But I wouldnt worry about it. Apple-a-Day
I have gone through 3 gxp 75's, on my lst ram they sent a gxp120 40 gig. its been acting fine, no problems. As for the monthly thing they retracted that statement....
ziddey
oh god. my desktop fujitsu (10.2gb) gave nasty grinding noises while ago. been fine now since its been in my server running 24/7. my laptop fujitsu 6.4gb needed a low level (i used maxtor's software) because it kept forming bad sectors. but i also hear fujitsu is good. Miran
They retracted that? Hmmm.. Maybe I'll give this a try then.. I think I'll get a good hard drive fan first though..
