Well, in the bios of my computer, you can enable the auto shutdown if the temp goes too high, or if the CPU cooling fan speed drops. You might ask Dell if their system has a similar feature. Otherwise, you might look into a 3rd party application that will do the same thing. I think, but not sure if the program motherboard monitor does this?

Try some app like CPUCool or MBM, and set it so if it goes above a certain temp, it shuts down by itself, or set it to a lower FSB when not using it, so it runs @ 800mhz or somthing (if your mobo supports this from Windows).

Overclocking?

If doing it or not doing it, its always a good idea to put some artic silver on the chip and heatsink. Keep that baby cool. Also you bought a dell, which means they try to use the cheapest parts.

I got a dell with P4 1.6GHz also... man I hope that doesn't happen to me. When did you get the processor?

the P4 has internal microcode that tells it to act like a regular PENTIUM when it gets too hot. you shouldn't need to worry, it shouldn't blow up.

P4's will lower the clock speed untill they cool down, its impossible to fry one even if it is running and you pull the heatsink off, not that i've tried it :D

Erm.... i'm not sure, i shouldn't think it would go that low :D I remember it was an article on tom's hardware that was about it ages ago, but they showed a fryed athlon and a slowed down P4.

Yeah, I remember that... but Quake3 was running at 3fps after a while, so that means you may unfortunately end up with a 66Mhz 486DX2 processor :D

I think they P4 slows down to 133mhz or something like that, when you put the fan back on though, no restart is needed to make it work at full speed. But the strange thing about this video is that when they put the heatsink back on it goes at full speed, but the fan is not turning

so my theory is correct

P4's are the equilivent of a 66mhz cpu and they posses small thingymoodoodles that emit lethal radiation that will kill you.. wait.. scratch that last part :p

wtf even a faulty fan wouldnt cause it to blow. id say the fan went faulty and so did the cpu because of voltage irregularities?! faulty power?

also the fan doesnt need to be spinning. the heatsink pulls the heat from the cpu and thats good enough. the fan pulls the bits of heat from the heatsink. (talking about the tommy hardware)

nah thats a no goer. dell will simply send you a bill asking you to pay for it. all the companies do that. thank god i havent had that done first hand. i just know someone who does the billing at compaq :D:D:D
