So, it's becoming a more talked about topic again: Defragmentation!

Yes the windows version is pretty crap (sorry to hurt anyone's feelings, but it is worth buying a 3rd party defragger I think!), so what do you use? Is it still good enough for you or do you use another program?

Give your usage, opinions, strife, etc. etc.

I usually reformat and reload my system every 6 months or so and I never defragment my hard drives.

EDIT: My 600th post!! :)

Same here, every 6 months I start fresh.

For my system drive, every month or so. For my download and scratch drives, every couple of days.

It all depends on what partition we're talking about here...

I do it a few times a week. It really depends on how fragmented my drive(s) happen to be.

Never. HFS+ handles that kinda junk for me.

You know, there's a reason why this is in the Windows section, not the Linux section...

I defrag everyday. I have this program called "Disk keeper 9" and it is set to defrag everyday from 12:00am to 6:00am every two ours.. very very good program :D

:D

HFS+ = Apple.

And fragmentation is pertinent to all filesystems (except those that handle it in realtime like... the one for Linux that is relatively new and I forgot it's name).

This topic has made me defrag... over one hour, and it's only 28%!

I'm curious, what makes third-party defraggers better than the Windows one?

Diskeeper is better because it does it quicker, and does a better job of it.

o&o defrag is best in my opition. i mike the background ervice which kicks in once in a while when pc is idleing.

so when i actually do a full defrag the system is not as bad as it would have being otherwise.

I don't have a set schedule.. I check the Diskeeper analyzer weekly to see if the hard drive is healthy.. if it is at a warning or critical level I will reformat.

Also using diskkeeper

With the set&forget option, it only runs when i'm doing nothing heavy.

It runs as service, without using much resource.
