That put the Washington Nationals right where they like to be ? behind on the scoreboard. ADVERTISEMENT Ryan Church, Brian Schneider and Vinny Castilla homered, and Loaiza settled down to earn his first win in more than a month, leading the Nationals past the Athletics 7-2 Wednesday night for their season-high sixth straight victory. Church had four hits and three RBIs, falling a double short of the cycle. The victory fit the pattern the Nationals have established in taking over first place in the competitive NL East. I don't think ANYone legitimately expected them to be doing this well this far into the season. Amazing how having fans who actually care can energize a team. Imagine what they could have done in Montreal if the league would have cut them some slack last year and gave them the requested $150,000 at the trade deadline when they were still tied for the wildcard spot.
