Nationals Win Sixth Consecutive Game

WASHINGTON - Esteban Loaiza labored through a 10-minute first inning in 89-degree heat against the

Oakland Athletics, giving up two runs. That put the Washington Nationals right where they like to be ? behind on the scoreboard.

Ryan Church, Brian Schneider and Vinny Castilla homered, and Loaiza settled down to earn his first win in more than a month, leading the Nationals past the Athletics 7-2 Wednesday night for their season-high sixth straight victory.

Church had four hits and three RBIs, falling a double short of the cycle.

The victory fit the pattern the Nationals have established in taking over first place in the competitive NL East. They trailed in each of their past 10 wins and in 23 of 33 overall this season.Since falling to 25-26 with a loss at St. Louis on May 28, Washington has gone 9-1 to move seven games over .500 for the first time since August 2003, when they were the Montreal Expos.b>

And they've done it all without their best player, Jose Vidro. Pretty amazing. I don't think ANYone legitimately expected them to be doing this well this far into the season. Amazing how having fans who actually care can energize a team.

I mean, they have Nick Johnson who is hitting the ball like a monster followed by Vinny Castilla. How can't they not be half decent?

In any other division I would be rooting for them, but as a long time Braves fan all I can do is root against them. I will admit however I'm just as surprised as anybody at how impressive they have been.

Certainly gives Expos fans a reason to be bitter. Imagine what they could have done in Montreal if the league would have cut them some slack last year and gave them the requested $150,000 at the trade deadline when they were still tied for the wildcard spot. Congrats to Nats fans though, and remember, don't take it forgranted because you never know when they'll be taken away.
