Explorer randomly popping up

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

The computer i'm on is a Windows 2000 Professional Computer. It has IE randomly popping up... to a point where the its taking over the screen (like spam would) and it freezes the computer. I used adaware already and its not that because there are still occuring. I used Symantec Anivirus and so far nothing...

Can anyone tell me what this is and how to fix it please?

Thanks in advanced.

Will Internet Explorer go to the correct site when you type an address in the address bar? It sounds like there is still adware/spyware somewhere on your PC.

I already scanned for spam... not it. It's still happening.

And no, i can't use IE when its doing that. It just says "Action cannot be found". The user mainly uses Netscape... not IE.

There are several things to try:

Check the startup folder

Check Task Manager for any out of the ordinary processes

Use the Registry Editor to look for other startup executables

Try another spyware scanner like Spybot

Try HiJackThis to get a list of dlls and executables tied to Internet Explorer

Thanks. I will. It's not my computer. It's a co-worker of mine and he has left for the day. I will try tomorrow when he gets in.

Thanks for your help

Ok, don't use HiJackThis. It's way too advanced for you.

As far as spyware, make sure you scan with something more than just adaware. I would also recommend installing ms anti-spyware and see if it can find anything. Also, later on, send me a screenshot of the msconfig windo startup tab and I'll see if I find anything suspicious. Worse comes to worse, call my cell next time you're on the system.

Also, you genius, you should have just asked me.
