Runaway bride hires agent to pitch TV movie

ASSOCIATED PRESS

ATLANTA ??Runaway bride Jennifer Wilbanks made a deal with a company that is pitching a television movie about her life ? annoying officials who spent thousands of dollars searching for her.

ReganMedia has acquired all media rights to the "life stories'' of Wilbanks and her fiance, John Mason, the New York multimedia company said today.

The company did not say whether any money had changed hands.

"I am looking forward to developing the scripted project with Wilbanks and Mason," company President Judith Regan said in a statement. "Theirs is an unexpected and compelling story of love and forgiveness that has certainly taught me a thing or two.''

The 32-year-old bride-to-be disappeared from her Duluth home on April 26, four days before her high-profile wedding with 600 guests and 28 attendants. After taking a bus to Albuquerque, N.M., she claimed she was abducted and sexually assaulted, but later recanted, saying she fled because of unspecified personal issueWilbanks pleaded no contest earlier this month to making a false statement and was sentenced to two years of probation and 120 hours of community service. She also was ordered to continue mental health treatment and pay the sheriff's office $2,550.

Duluth spent nearly $43,000 to search for her. Wilbanks has repaid $13,249.

News of her deal infuriated local officials.

"I guess that says more about this whole case than anything else that has happened. I'm really sort of disgusted by the whole thing," said Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter.

He lamented that anyone would pay "for what is just a silly story," but said Wilbanks had the legal right to make the deal. ``I didn't want this to happen but there was no way I could prevent it," he said.

Lydia Sartain, Wilbanks' attorney, did not immediately return a call for comment.

Mason's mother, Vicki Mason, said today: "I haven't had any comment about Jennifer Wilbanks from day one, and I still don't.''

Well, at first I was sort of on her side. I agree that what she did was wrong and yes she should pay for it, but I didn't think jail time was necessary, however, now that she's in it for the money, I want her locked up and the key lost

Why does these people always wanna make a movie after something like this happens...that is kinda crap really. There should be no way that this lady should make any money on this, or any kind of strange story like this ( drowing you kids) (killing you parents) (cuttin you husbands pee pee off) :pinch: it's just sad

If she makes money from this thats just sad. She should repay the money for the search for her and the rest should go to a charity, she doesnt need to be rewarded like this

Hang on a sec... what was she guilty of? What crime was committed? AFAIK, there is nothing illegal about leaving and not telling anyone where you are, which is as far as I can tell what she did. She never told anyone to look for her.

What is wrong? Yes. Illegal... I dunno.

lying or false statement as they say in court.

"she claimed she was abducted and sexually assaulted"

she claimed it was an hispanic guy also, which made some people angry

i'm pretty sure you can't make up fake crimes....then the police wasted time looking for her and the "person" who committed the crime.

if there is a law that prevents criminals from profiting, than it should definitely apply in this case.

Lying is not a crime. Unless she did it on the stand, in that case it is purgury (sp). Also, she didn't accuse a specific person right? So no false accusation crime either.

Don't get me wrong, I personally think she should be put in one of those devices that lock your neck and arms and put out on display for all to see... but in the letter of the law, I am still missing the actual crime.

OK... I found this:

Sec. 262.01. False report--If no crime committed.

No person shall report or cause to be reported to the police department by telephone, in writing or by any other means or communication, any felony, gross misdemeanor or misdemeanor, knowing that no such felony, gross misdemeanor or misdemeanor has, in fact, been committed.

(Code 1956, ? 484.01)

Sec. 262.02. False information.

It is unlawful for any person in reporting a felony, gross misdemeanor or misdemeanor which has actually been committed to knowingly give false information about the same to the police department.

(Code 1956, ? 484.02)

ok, so that part is illegal.

And I guess since it was taxpayer money that was used to try and find her, when that same money could have been used in other investigations, then she should be made to repay that back.

Thanks!

well she did something illegal.

when she called police from a pay phone she said she was abducted and abused

lying to police speaks for its-self

but regardless she is a idiot and to know that a search party is out and sitting back watching everything form the hotels she was staying at watching the coverage (which she admitted) is a gross thought :x

then her husband is crazy for even staying withthis ugly ass chick, if some chick did this to me ESP. before wedding i would spit in her face
