bigmoose
hi last week i built this system for my friend and when i had finished installing the OS(XP), and rebooted things were working fine, installed all the drivers and such, and got the updates from MS, with no real hassles, installed a few more programs and games and suddenly the system wouldnt reboot, tried a lot of things others suggested to me, take the vid card, chage some reg settings, change other bios settings, but still nothing. so i reformatted again and installed the OS (XP) and drivers, no problems so far, installed stylexp, and had the reboot problem again. reformatted again, and installed drivers for a 3rd time,a nd this time when i installed the USB2.0 drivers off the motherboard cd, it wouldnt restart automatically. here is the problem :: when i clock on shutdown or reboot it will exit out of windows and go to the "your computer is shutting down" screen, but it wont turn off automatically, or reboot automatically either. however when i reboot manually it is not going to scandisk, so i think its a problem with the mb turning the power off?? could it be jumper settings connecting the case to the mb? i have flashed the bios, and have also tried changing the apci settings, all to no avail. here are the specs of the system motherboard : AOPEN AK77-333 VIA Apollo KT333 DDR333 USB 2.0 AC97 2.2 Audio (5.1 channel) ATX M/B cpu : AMD Athlon XP 1900 + Socket A CPU OEM with a COOLERMASTER DP5-6I31C Socket A / FC-PGA Socket 370 Cooler Recom by AMD ram : CORSAIR 512MB XMS-2700 DDR 333MHz Ultra Performance With Integrated Heat Spreader vid : Leadtek WinFast GeForce 4 MX 440 A170 64Mb DDR TH (TV Out & H/W Mon) AGP Retail hd : WESTERN DIGITAL WD600AB WD Caviar 60 GB 5400RPM UATA/100 EIDE Hard Drive other stuff :: NETCOMM IN5699 InModem 56 V90 56K Internal Fax/Modem PIONEER DVD-116 DVD-ROM DRIVE ATAPI 16 X TRAY LOAD OEM SONY OEM MPF920-E 3.5 INCH 1.44MB Floppy Drive SAMSUNG SyncMaster 753DFX 17 inch Flat CRT Monitor AOpen H600A BigSize Midi-tower case with 300W P4 Ready Front USB/Audio ALTEC LANSING AVS300 Multimedia 3 Piece Speaker System MICROSOFT Internet Keyboard Win9x PS/2 Retail Box LOGITECH OEM B69 SERIES 69 - OPTICAL MOUSE PS2 LG OEM GCE-8240B 24W/10RW/40R 8MB Buffer E-IDE CD-RW Drive
Crazy_Seb
Hmm, might be the PSU? Maybe its busted, or try looking in the BIOS for "restart on powerloss" options, try to disable it.

bigmoose
no luck yet, going to try it in a few hours, the psu is just new, so it shouldnt be busted already? if not i can take over my 250 psu? to test it out? good idea? ill keep yas all posted here
bigmoose
ok found the solution.... wait for it .... i changed the mosse from usb to ps2 and it started rebooting, so i guess it was a problem with USB2 drivers and the power feature :( least its fixed:)
Khujo
I have seen the exact same issue with a brand new hp laptop that had usb port issues and would not shut down with any of the usb mice we tried :/ But if we pulled it before shutdown it would unlaod the driver, then shutdown was possible. Would be very annoying on a pc, not as bad on a laptop.
bigmoose
true true, but now i know what it is, we can try a workaround! there are a couple of things im gonna try still windows update (some usb mouse one) and the new viq drivers, maybe they have a usb2 driver :) cheers moose
mr.dan
try unplugging all the accessories such as mouse and keybaord and seee if it shuts down... this can tell you if it's a hardware problem... alot of times USB is what won't let the system shutdown
Khujo
Sp1 for XP will likely have proper usb2 support, i don't know for sure as i don't have usb2. But those sound like good places to start.

AndyD
hmm very interesting...my bro is using a usb cameramate to access his smartmedia cards. that would explain why everything seemed to work just fine when i had the pc but then all of the sudden not work when he got it. ill have the pc tomorrow so i will check on this and post my findings.
