pc not shutting down - any ideas?

Recommended Posts

hi

last week i built this system for my friend and when i had finished installing the OS(XP), and rebooted things were working fine, installed all the drivers and such, and got the updates from MS, with no real hassles, installed a few more programs and games and suddenly the system wouldnt reboot, tried a lot of things others suggested to me, take the vid card, chage some reg settings, change other bios settings, but still nothing.

so i reformatted again and installed the OS (XP) and drivers, no problems so far, installed stylexp, and had the reboot problem again. reformatted again, and installed drivers for a 3rd time,a nd this time when i installed the USB2.0 drivers off the motherboard cd, it wouldnt restart automatically.

here is the problem :: when i clock on shutdown or reboot it will exit out of windows and go to the "your computer is shutting down" screen, but it wont turn off automatically, or reboot automatically either.

however when i reboot manually it is not going to scandisk, so i think its a problem with the mb turning the power off?? could it be jumper settings connecting the case to the mb?

i have flashed the bios, and have also tried changing the apci settings, all to no avail.

here are the specs of the system

im having similar probs with the pc i just built my bro. it was working just fine but now it wont reboot for some reason. any luck on figuring things out? i was considering the fact that it might be that he needs a new power supply.

ok

found the solution....

wait for it ....

i changed the mosse from usb to ps2 and it started rebooting, so i guess it was a problem with USB2 drivers and the power feature :(

least its fixed:)

I have seen the exact same issue with a brand new hp laptop that had usb port issues and would not shut down with any of the usb mice we tried :/ But if we pulled it before shutdown it would unlaod the driver, then shutdown was possible. Would be very annoying on a pc, not as bad on a laptop.

true true,

but now i know what it is, we can try a workaround!

there are a couple of things im gonna try still

windows update (some usb mouse one)

and the new viq drivers, maybe they have a usb2 driver :)

cheers

try unplugging all the accessories such as mouse and keybaord and seee if it shuts down... this can tell you if it's a hardware problem...

alot of times USB is what won't let the system shutdown

hmm very interesting...my bro is using a usb cameramate to access his smartmedia cards. that would explain why everything seemed to work just fine when i had the pc but then all of the sudden not work when he got it. ill have the pc tomorrow so i will check on this and post my findings.
