Poll: Geforce4 Ti4200: 64mb or 128mb?

which would you pick?

-64meg: less ram, cheaper (about $40-$60canadian cheaper), faster clock speeds&bandwidth, probably less lasting due to having half the ram

-128mb: twice the ram, more expensive, slower clockspeeds&bandwidth, probably longer life due to higher overall power

basically speed and price versus power and lastability

hehe lastability. we need a neowinian's dictionary :D:D:D that would be a great addon. for now, it really depends on your usage. if you are into ishloads of textures, the 128 is a must. else do 64.

also anyone know about tex compression? theoretically for most games nowadays, if i have a 128, i really dont need the compression and itll go faster with ssame qualikty?

Two words: Doom Three

Certain games are already taking advantage of the 128MB cards, such as SOF2's "very high" settings. You can always OC that bad boy up around the standard levels.

There was a review of a comparison between the Gainward 64MB and 128MB cards, I'll try to find it for you.

I saw the GF4 ti4200s myself today and they are not as expensive as I thought

Currently I have a AudioExcel GeForce2 MX 400 64mb card

if I upgraded to the GF4 ti4200 128mb

would I see a substancial difference?

and will this card last me longer then 6 months?

I ask the second question because I thought the 64mb card I have now would sorta do me for longer then it has.

if you're undecided pull for a 4400 its one speed and one size. if you're into the 4200 i suggeswt the 128MB

He means it'll become outdated faster, not that it'll stop to function faster :D

Something like this: You have a 3d card that has 8mb, and another one that has the same chipset/speed, but has 16mb. Then, you try to run RTCW on both. It'll only run on the 16mb one. Get it?

I upgraded from a geforce 2 mx to a geforce 4 ti4400 and i saw a humongous improvement, you should still see a massive improvement with the ti4200, i'd definately recommend upgrading its the biggest improvement u can make to ur system, upgrading my CPU from 800MHz to an athlon XP 1700+ increased my 3d mark score by 1000, upgrading my card increased the score by over 5000!!!

well i don't know how much power UT 2003 really needs (or maybe cuz it's buggy) but whoa that thing drains my GF3 TI 200! i imagine Doom III will be just as much too but in my situation i wouldn't buy a video card just yet. The NV30 will be comign out soon and i know those babies will milk UT 2003 or even the the R300!

To answer the question tho i'd get the 64MB version since it's cheaper and only 2 or so games really take advantage of the additional mem. They all would use it i guess but it wouldn't benefit. C'mon , is 3 - 5 FPS gonna make that big of a deal?

Oh and about the Matrox card... hmm.. didn't impress me at all... sorry fellaz. "You are the weakest link... goodbye!"

the difference between the 128MB and 64MB card is that with 128MB it has alot more storage space for textures. Which could result in increased performance as the textures are in the buffers or RAM or whatever ready for it. If the same amount of textures cannot be loaded and processed as fast as the 128MB one then the 64MB will have a performance hit.

Also if the 128MB one is clocked slower then just clock it up, it can take it as its the same GPU.

In terms of lastability just do it man nothing ever lasts. The Matrox Parhelia comes out. It'll be obsolete in less than 18 months.

Partly because games designers are using bigger and better graphics because PC systems that are sold in shops are getting more powerful graphics cards in them as standard.

So just go for whatever.

MixPC is evil. first off, they had the vidcard i wanted at a good price. but i go to order, and it's declined. so i tried again, and again, about 10 times, then again this morning, figuring its too late at night to approve the credit card #.

so this moring, my mom is called by the bank security, because her credit card's been red flagged, because there are 10 of the gfx cards being charged to her credit card. (keep in mind they said the order didnt go though)

so my mom phones this store, and then they say then that they dont even ship to Canada (or any other foreign countries). then why the hell is your order form set up with Zip/Postal Code? and why is there a country selector with about a hundred countries on it?!

idiots...

so basically, we're being charged $3000 for a $200 video card, which can never be shipped here. such as this example. http://www.penny-arcade.com/view.php3?date...001-03-31&res=l

and its going to take a few days to clear the credit now
