Firefox Popups

I've got 1gb of memory and I noticed my computer literally stops when I click a link to allow a popup. Just now I had gkrellm open when I clicked one and it confirmed 99% usage. Why the hell is it doing this?

Why do you click to ALLOW a popup?

Uh..I dont. I just click the link and it opens. For example, if I want to see a larger screenshot it opens in a new window. To do this, you usually have to make it a popup. Or some sites, when you open them, the main page is actually a popup (I hate them but what can you do)
