Opera Newbie

Hey there, currently trying out Opera to see how it compares to Firefox. :cool:

Anyways, here's are my questions:

Is it possible to have seperate reload and stop buttons?

How do I disable that annoying left-click popup that comes up when I double click on text? You know, the one with "Copy text", "Copy to note", etc.

How do I make the Page Bar thinner (like Firefox with it's default theme)?

How do I set the default Windows toolbar (the one with File, Edit, View, etc.) as a seperate customizable toolbar so I can put other buttons on the far right?

Hope you guys can help. :)

EDIT: Another question: How do I get Opera to display my "Text Select" cursor when I scroll over normal text?

EDIT 2: Another question, again: Is there a toolbar button that opens the Transfers/Downloads window?

EDIT 3: How do I remove the "Bookmark Page" and "Open all folder items" options on top of every folder in the Bookmarks pulldown menu? It's really annoying when I accidentally click the second option. :pinch:

:) :) :cry:

Have a look here

Fraid not, sorry.

You would need to download a different skin to change the size, you could create a copy of the default skin then open it and edit the skin.ini file. I don't know the exact values to chnage but I'll have a look and find out what they are.

OK I have had a look and I think this is the part you have to edit in the skin.ini file

[Tab Button Skin]
Type = BoxTile
...
Margin Right = -11
Padding Left = 4
Padding Top = 2
Padding Right = 9
Padding Bottom = 1

Specifically the top and bottom padding.

How do I set the default Windows toolbar (the one with File, Edit, View, etc.) as a seperate customizable toolbar so I can put other buttons on the far right?
The menu bar is unable to have any changes made to it. The only thing you can do to it is to edit the menu.ini file and add extra manus to it.

You can't
EDIT 2: Another question, again: Is there a toolbar button that opens the Transfers/Downloads window?
Don't know if this is what you are after, go here and look for a button called Transfers as management page

Anyone else know solutions to the questions I asked? :cry: Some of the features are really annoying for me.

Go to preferences, Advanced, Toolbars, uncheck enable hotclick menu, though that is a very useful feature.

There is no good reason to put buttons on the menu bar - it's a menu bar widget, not a toolbar. Anyway, all you do is make it fatter in other programs anyway.

You can of course turn off the menu bar if you don't want to use it.

About the cursors, no I don't think there's a way to change it... unless you are in an edit box where that happens automatically. As far as I know the standard is not to show a I shaped cursor unless you can click and edit the text, which makes sense to me.

THANK YOU! Finally I got rid of that annoying menu. :yes:

In Firefox (and before, with Internet Explorer), I place a small bookmarks bar along side that toolbar to save space and for quick and easy clicking. I know Opera uses it as a widget, but is there anyway to convert it to a movable/modifiable toolbar?

You have to be the first person I've met who dislikes the hotclick menu :rolleyes:

Sorry, the menu is fixed, only thing you can do is edit the menus. What you might be able to do though is turn off the menu widget, and recreate said menu with the personal bar or the menu dropdown button already suggested. Try the Customize Opera forum at my.opera.com/forums .

I don't ever use bookmark buttons (well ok, two) I prefer nicknames myself, cleaner visually, and faster. Or I can just go through the bookmarks menu.

How do I disable that annoying left-click popup that comes up when I double click on text? You know, the one with "Copy text", "Copy to note", etc.

Why? It's very useful feature. Use double click for select word. Use triple click for select sentence and more clicks for select paragraph.

How do I make the Page Bar thinner (like Firefox with it's default theme)?

1. Use special compact skins. For example try skins:

Opera Standart Zuper Slim8

Breeze skins and its modifications

...and many other

You can find it here

http://my.opera.com/community/customize/skins/

How do I set the default Windows toolbar (the one with File, Edit, View, etc.) as a seperate customizable toolbar so I can put other buttons on the far right?

1. Disable menu bar (use forum search Opera on Neowin).

2. Get buttons with menu items from

http://nontroppo.org/wiki/CustomButtons#menu

and drag to any toolbar/panel that you want, for example drag to address bar.

EDIT 2: Another question, again: Is there a toolbar button that opens the Transfers/Downloads window?

Yes.

http://nontroppo.org/wiki/CustomButtons#panels

Get button "Transfers as management page"

EDIT 3: How do I remove the "Bookmark Page" and "Open all folder items" options on top of every folder in the Bookmarks pulldown menu? It's really annoying when I accidentally click the second option.

Yes, you can.

Edit your menu file in your Opera's profile directory.

Find section [bookmark Folder Menu]

Just comment or remove these lines:

Item, 70464=Add to bookmarks, -2

Item, 21504=Open link, -2

Yeah, that left click menu is pretty useless to me since I'm used to the normal right click and copy. It's the only feature I don't like about Opera, but thankfully you can disable it. :p

Hmm.. which file? I don't have any "menu"-named file there. There's a menu directory under the profiles directory, but it's empty. :unsure:

Mmm, I think you can actually create a properly named file there, add that info. That way your changes don't get overwritten on upgrades to Opera. For more help, you can go to Opera's forums, under Customize Opera.

Oh, also, is there a way to add a "Block images from..." option whenever I right-click on pictures, like in Firefox, so I can block ads and other stuff? :)

(Couldn't edit my post above, apparently)

look in the directory where you installed Opera, in the defaults folder copy the standard_menu from there into the profile that is empty and make all your changes in that one :)

It's better to create a file find your profile directory location and you'll find a menu subdirectory. Create an empty file in menu (my_menu.ini) and edit that, adding:

Opera Preferences version 2.0
; Menu specification file for Opera 7.0
; This file is stored in UTF-8 encoding

[Version]
File Version=2

[Info]
Name=My menu prefs
Description=Personal Opera menu setup
Comments=This file contains only modified items...
Author=
Version=1

Then add in only the parts you want to change, eg if you want to add something to the [Document Popup Menu] then you will only need to add this into the new menu.

So it would look like this

Opera Preferences version 2.0
; Menu specification file for Opera 7.0
; This file is stored in UTF-8 encoding

[Version]
File Version=2

[Info]
Name=My menu prefs
Description=Personal Opera menu setup
Comments=This file contains only modified items...
Author=
Version=1

[Document Popup Menu]

Item, 50426,= Back
Item, 50427,= Forward
Item, 67648,= Rewind
Item, 67649,= Fast Forward
--------------------1
Item, 50428,= Reload
Submenu, 200000, Reload Menu
--------------------2
Item, 70464= Add to bookmarks, 1
Item, 50215= Copy document address
Item, 65178= Send document address in mail
Item, "Open in IE"= Execute program, "iexplore","%u"
Item, "Open in Firefox"= Execute program, "firefox","%u"
--------------------3
Item, 50004= Print document
Item, 44002= View document source
Item, 70465= Validate frame source
--------------------4
Include, Internal Frame
Include, Internal Document Background
--------------------5
Item, 50995= Enter fullscreen | Leave fullscreen

[OFF TOPIC] here we see the logic to get lot of help:

1) declare you switch from FF

2) ask specific questions instead of complaint

3) say you will make the transition (or transaction?)

Agreed, personally I don't give a damn if someone use both Firefox and Opera, if they in a nice manner ask for help and I am able to help I will do so.

Opera is the browser that best suit my needs for others it is Firefox or whatever. At the end of the day it don't effect me what so ever what browser others use, I still sleep well despite the fact that a vast majority use IE.
