NVidia 7xxx Series GPU's

Recommended Posts

Has nvidia announced when they're going to ship the new video gpu's based on the 7xxx?

-Enthusiast

--7800GTX?

-Mainstream

--7600?

-Performance

--7200?

Just guessing but there is no point buying a Geforce 6600GT if in a month a 7600GT? is released?!?!

Haven't heard about the 7600 or 7200 yet. Don't be expecting them. And those titles just don't make sense at all... Mainstream would be the lowest if anything. Professionals tend to buy Quadro FX, FireGL, or others. Gamer would fill both midrange and high-end slots, although I guess you could say Casual Gamer or Hardcore Gamer.

Why would you put it in this order? I hate it when people think games require less power than anything else, when gamer are in general more power hungry than any other applications!

Not for a while I would think. The GeForce 7800 series is going to be announced tomorrow, with availability starting Wednesday. Should be available in GeForce 7800 GTX and GeForce 7800 (non-GTX) versions. Where is the Ultra version, you ask? NVIDIA is saving the GeForce 7800 Ultra to ruin ATI's R520 launch in late July.

Anyway, since the GeForce 6600 series and GeForce 6200 series are doing so well, I wouldn't think NVIDIA will release mid-range and budget cards based on the G70 architecture for about six months. So, like sometime in the Fall. By the way, the GeForce 7200 series is going to be amazing: eight full pixel pipelines and a 128-bit memory interface, all for under $100!

The mainstream and budget lines are usually introduced after the grandiose enthusiast release hooplah. A 7600 and 7200 modeled after the 6600/6200 series cards would be a good assumption.

But if they're releasing a new high end video card why would they hold back the rest of the series, no matter how well the previous generation is doing  <pause>

Thanks stncttr908 :D I guess then there is less than 12 hours to wait to hear what nvidia has to offer my loose change budget.

That's always the way it is. Remember, it's not about the mid-range and budget performance. It's about having a card at the top of the 3DMark05 benchmark. Then, people will see that NVIDIA has the fastest card available, and automatically assume that the $200 and below cards are really good as well, regardless of what they are called. It's all marketing. My guess (and most of this will be revealed tomorrow) is this is how it will go:

Card Name | Pipelines | Core Clockspeed / Memory Clockspeed | Price, Release

NVIDIA GeForce 7800 Ultra | 24-pipelines | 500MHz / 700MHz | $500 (in July)

NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX | 24-pipelines | 430MHz / 600MHz | $400 (Tomorrow)

NVIDIA GeForce 7800 | 16-pipelines | 400MHz / 550MHz | $300 (Tomorrow)

NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT | 12-pipelines | 500MHz / 500MHz | $200 (in Fall)

NVIDIA GeForce 7600 | 12-pipelines | 350MHz / 350MHz | $150 (in Fall)

NVIDIA GeForce 7200 | 8-pipelines (128-bit memory interface) | 300MHz / 350MHz | $100 (in Fall)

NVIDIA GeForce 7200 TC | 8-pipelines (64-bit memory interface) | 300MHz / 300MHz | $60 (in Fall)

I could be wrong too. The GeForce 7600 series could wind-up with a full 16-pipelines ( :woot: ), and the GeForce 7800 (non-GTX) could have 20-pipelines. Anyway, like I said before, I expect NVIDIA to at least release some information on the mid-range and budget cards tomorrow when they announce the GeForce 7800 series. Of course, prices will be higher in the beginning as well. Like right now, you can already order (pre-order, that is) a GeForce 7800 GTX, but it will set you back a whopping $700 (!).

16 pipelines would be :woot: + :woot: Yeah! But if I can't afford the 7600GT then when the new series of 7800's is released, the prices of the 6800's and 6600's should drop, huh ( )?

Yeah, the current GeForce 6-series will drop in prices quite a bit. The GeForce 6800-series will actually be phased out fairly quickly as well. It costs NVIDIA quite a lot of money to make those huge, 130-nm chips over at IBM's East Fishkill factory. And it makes no sense to continue producing them when they are making the GeForce 7800-series for less money (or roughly the same) on TSMC's 110-nm process.

You are correct on most of the specs except for the prices, GTX will be around $500-$600 so expect more for the Ultra.

My guess (and most of this will be revealed tomorrow) is this is how it will go:
