Utah Boy Scout Found Alive in Woods

Boy Scout officials confirmed Tuesday that a missing Boy Scout has been found alive in Utah, four days after he vanished.

Searchers in the area where Brennan Hawkins was located said he had no major injuries, however it could not be confirmed. He was found just before noon near Lily Lake, about five miles northeast of the Boy Scout camp where he was last seen Friday, said Kay Godfrey, director of public relations for the Great Salt Lake Council.

"He has been found, he is alive, and he's in pretty good shape for an 11-year-old boy," Godfrey told The Associated Press. "It's a modern day miracle that he's been found."

Rescuers said Hawkins was being transported by helicopter to a children's hospital in Salt Lake City.

The boy vanished from a Boy Scout camp in the Uinta Mountains (search) on Friday.

Emergency workers said Hawkins must have had to cross a river in order to end up where he was found.

Summit County Sheriff Dave Edmunds said earlier that the boy's chances were good because nights had been warm, with temperatures falling only into the 50s. The area is about 100 miles northeast of Salt Lake City.

Officials said Brennan disappeared somewhere along a dirt road between the camp's artificial climbing wall and the "chow hall," where he was to meet his friend. The East Fork of the Bear River is within 100 yards of the road.

The normally ankle-deep stream was the main focus of the search and the most problematic for rescuers because it's deeper than usual in many areas ? up to 15 feet deep in spots ? because of a heavy mountain snow melt.

Brennan carried no food or water, and his family said he did not have a good sense of direction.

"He's probably dehydrated, sleep-deprived, definitely hungry," said Brennan's father, Toby. "With him being so young."

it doesn't say nobody abducted him and left him, it just says that he is not hurt... Who knows, maybe some wild animal chased him off the path and he couldn't find his way back... Thats why i always carry bread crumbs when I'm in the woods LOL

the kid is obviously an idiot, I've been camping and backpacking tons of times. If you ever get lost, just follow a water source.

True. But he is a boy scout. Can they only tie knots these days?

Yay for happy endings, but I don't like them calling it a modern day miracle. I'm just sensitive about that sort of thing, though. It's more like good fortune. A miracle would've been him magically reappearing safe and sound in his bed at home.

Miracle, like hero, is a word that's been watered down more and more over the years, to where it can mean any good outcome from a worrisome situation. The cynical side of me would suspect that, by cheapening its meaning, people have an easier time taking things purely on faith. After all, if miracles are everywhere, then everything proves faith.

Of course, proof nullifies faith... tho' you need faith that it's a miracle... so... er... ah... it only assures faith for the stupid?

 That's great that he was found, but what's wrong with that kid; wondering around for 4 days, surrounded by all those people. I wasn't the brightest at 11, but I could always find my way home.

You can only live a few days without water.
