House Approves Flag-Burning Amendment

Recommended Posts

WASHINGTON (AP) - The House on Wednesday approved a constitutional amendment that would give Congress the power to ban desecration of the American flag, a measure rejected twice by the Senate in the past decade but expected to get a closer vote this year.

By a 286-130 vote - eight more than needed - House members approved the amendment by the required two-thirds majority after a debate over whether such a ban would run afoul of the Constitution's free-speech protections.

If approved by a similar two-thirds majority in the Senate, the amendment would then move to the states for ratification. It would have to be approved by three-fourths, or 38, of the 50 state legislatures to become the 28th amendment to the Constitution.

how cool. In a country where it's fine to execute people it's a crime to burn a piece of material :D Crazeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. Symbolism is for people like the kkk and nazi parties, not demcratic countries :D

what next? Canada bans trees from shedding maple leaves..........it's seen as a rejection of unity and is a form of desecration :D

Wales has banned the eating of leeks as it is now regarded as sacrliege towards their national symbol :D

^^ wtf?

Umm, certain states use capital punishment for people who commit severe felonies. I fail to see what that has to do with burning the flag. It has long been illegal to deface currency. The flag should be no different.

If they want to burn the flag let 'em I say. If your not happy with the government you should by law be able to show your feelings, it is a democracy.

I'm burning one just out of spite.

I'm sorry but most americans need to quit being so inward and get some worldly exposure. Not me though, since I am God.

Fine. Flag-burning will be illegal.

I guess then we'll have to use the ********s in the House and Senate as burning material for our protests.

Ugh. I understand patriotism, but please. It's a piece of useless cloth.

True it is a piece of cloth. But it is a symbol of Our Country, not our Goverment but for every boy, girl, man woman who lives here or has lived here, it stand for our way of life. Bash or make fun all you want but if someone took your little blanky away from you you'd be crying to mommy. Bash me, bash my goverment but respect my country as I try to respect yours.

Cody

Just to add I have a bigger problem with Americians who burn our flag. Other countries have a right to express themselves against us as well as our goverment and country.

If someone took your blanket away, you'd be crying, because it's your blanket. The government doesn't own all the flags in the country. If you're burning a flag, chances are that it belongs to you, which means it's 100% your own private property, which the government should have absolutely no say over. (And if it's not your own flag, then you're gonna get in trouble for destroying someone else's property.)

I like peanut butter so squirrels should be able to roam free. <That makes as much sense as what you just said

Defacing money costs the government money. If you buy a flag and burn it the government doesnt suffer (financially).

You cant deface money not because (double negative I know) its unpatriotic but because the government owns the notes. You can do whateber you want to coin though. Since you own it. Bills are just a legal notice saying that the piece of paper represents x amount of gold. (Which is another issue all together, hint hint they dont have enough gold).

some people here are just too naive

its not the material.. its the thought.. just like when someones stuff gets destroyed in a fire.. they always say no matter how much it sux to lose all that stuff.. the thing that they are truly sad about is all the things that have sentimental value.. same thing with flag burning.. its a sentiment of disrespect to the US (or any other country) so it should be banned.. no one cares about the stupid cloth itself burning, its the colors on it that represent the fact that we are a liberated country.. so stop saying the US is being materialistic and w/e coz its a bit deeper than that.. stop being so ignorant people.

:D I?m glad this passed people are getting way to liberal in this country, the only people making decisions are the right wing liberalists and the common sense middle grown conservatives. People argue that our country should be more like France, or Canada. They are complaining that our unemployment rate is too low. HAHA look at France's it?s a whooping 10.2%! Compared to our 4.4%! Whilst people are taking our country's democracy and warping its meaning and using it as an excuse for everything. The reason this country was/is still doing well is because of competition, which means less taxes for everyone and less rights "programs" for those that don't want to get there ass out and work hard to make something for themselves. People can complain all they want and say that our country needs to change; well I certainly don't think that the US needs to conform to other countries economies and governmental systems, if I believe correctly we do want to stay productive and on top.;). ;)

While you're at it, why don't you ban other sentiments of disrespect? Like suing the government, or writing editorials criticising the government, or staging protests against the government? Why don't you just arrest someone if they don't stand up for the anthem? Why don't you throw all those disrespectful anti-American pinko journalists in the gulag for writing about how they disagree with the government about various things?

Way to think it through.

So instead of spending the time to figure out what makes these people so unhappy with the governement that they feel the neeed to burn the flag, they simply vote to take away the right to do so. God, I love my government.

You seem to have mistaken the Flag for the Goverment. The Flag IS our Country, what it stands for, who we are, what we believe. The Goverment is just the voice of the People, and the People don't want their Flag burned.

As a member of the "People" I want the right to freely express myself. My government, instead of using the time to correct itself so that people wouldn't feel a need to burn the flag, took the same time and simply chose to start the process of banning the act itself. What good does that do? Those people will still be unhappy, even more so after having their freedom taken away from them. Just like lav-chan said, why not just take away the right to complain about the government at all? You're right, many people don't want to see the flag burned, but, then again, I don't want to see the KKK exist and yet they do. Freedom of speech and expression.

I dont think the people want their rights granted by the first 10 amendments limited. A while back, the supreme court ruled that it was constituional to burn the flag of the US.

Good. I am all for this. The flag is a symbol of this country, it's freedom, and what it stands for. If you hate the US enough to burn the flag you shouldn't be living here. So if you want to burn the flag get the frick out! That's the way it should be. Burning the flag isn't free speech and I don't know why people confuse it with that.

I see where you're coming from, but you don't have to disrespect the Flag to go against the Goverment. You can take out an ad in a newspaper or tv. Make a sign and protest in front of the White House, any number of things to disagree with the Goverment but the Flag stands for the People not the Goverment, those living and those who have gave their lives so people like you and I can say Bush Sucks without getting shot.

Did you appoint yourself Chairman of the Flag Commission, or are you quoting a previous ruling?
