E t h a n
people need to stay off their cell phones. If you get a call, pull of the road. Studies have shown that people suck at driving, but mainly more with cell phones. 586109611 Yes, this is illegal in Britain because it causes something like five times as many accidents as drinking does, or so they say. Speed limits are mainly there to earn the government much needed (if little deserved) revenue.

Baigley
^^ EXACTLY BroChaos. NEMO makes a good point too. I've had 3 asian women (not trying to blame them, but its just how it happend) in their SUV's (Another issue) change lanes into my lane and almost hit me because they werent paying attention and ran my ass off the road. SUV's are a subject that I dont want to get on right now. Just think of the SUV Commercial with the big animal thing that everyone is trying to ride, but not everyone knows how to handle it. Enough said. Edit: LOL @ BAWX
Bawx
For the most part it is 16 lanes wide with some extra temporary lanes for ramping on and off You know where I can see this highway? I'd like to see a 16 lane wide highway.
nemo
people here in america really don't understand the concept of slower cars driving on the right lanes. i see people, daily, driving 55-60 in the slow lanes (in a 65mph zone), and then just move into the fast lane, even though there is absolutely nobody in front of them in the slow lane. then you have the people doing 65-70, who now need to pass these slow people, then you have lots of unncessary lane changes, and mixing of speeds, and this is what causes accidents. oh, and i agree, about cellphones. they should be 100% illegal on all U.S. roads. $10,000 fine and 6 months suspended license if you are caught. 586109751 Yep. That's my main beef with drivers. They don't pay attention to other cars around them (which you need to). I've been on someone's ass for 4 minutes flashing and honking at them because they're going 50 in a 55 in the left lane. They don't move over. Then they finally see me and don't do anything but tell ME to slow down. THE LEFT LANE IS FOR PASSING, NOT FOR DRIVING LIKE A MORON. There should never be anyone in the left lane unless you are passing another car. God, when I see people like this it drives me nuts, and I do alot of lane changes trying to get around the people holding up EVERYONE behind them. With a mix of people not being able to drive it is very dangerous. Sometimes I come too close for my own comfort. Cell phones are illegal here in NY. Except I see people on them all the time. It ****es me off cause they almost always can't drive while talking. It's dangerous. And 99% of the time, a cop isn't around when they should be. Then you get people who drive at 90km/h and drift across lanes without signalling. Those people are the real danger. 586109766 Not using signals makes me want to ram people off the road.

If I get a call, I answer it. I keep the phone handy so I dont have to rummage for it, and count down from 45 as soon as i answer it. I probably wouldnt answer it at all if it wasnt usually my mom. Baigley
Nemo's comment on the Left lane passing.. Im pretty sure in Germany or somewhere over there, it is ILLEGAL to just ride in the left lane. I think it should be illegal over here only on major highways. But nothing of that sort will ever be done over here. :(
Jesse Carlton
once on the 401 south of to, there was construction and dead stop traffic, a guy in an suv tried to drive BETWEEN THE LANES of stopped traffic about 3 km/h, and then hit our bumper...then honked at us...then the construction guys yelled at him....people like that are what cause accidents. In this city its 3 usually. The third lane usually ties exits and onramps, so you always come off/on it. So that leaves 2 lanes for like 3 million people during rush hour. Try limiting that to one lane and it would take me 3 hours to get home :(

BroChaos Veteran Posted June 23, 2005 Veteran Share Posted June 23, 2005 another think i wonder, why don't they emphasize this type of stuff more on driving tests? honestly, just getting slow people out of the left lane, that should be a really easy task to complete. then people need to learn that their side view mirrors are for blind spots, becuase you don't need 3(!) mirrors to look behind you. 9 out of 10 people's cars that i get into all have their side view mirrors adjusted so they can see behind them. drives me nuts. PyX
Speed doesn't save lives? What kind of article is this. there's a difference in hitting a wall at 100 km/h and hitting a wall at 180 km/h. You might be dead (okay, now it doesn't do a difference) or almost dead at 100, so what about 180? And yes, you have less time to react if you go faster and the car has less control/stability, that is what explains that it might, possibly, could, save lives. There are MANY factors. Some people drive like **** here in Montreal - not that I know how to drive yet - but yes, some are retarded. Those who go too fast are ****ing retarded too. Those who drink and those who take drugs become easily retarded depending on what they take. Not only that, but sometimes the conception of the roads suck. Normally, it is 4 collector lanes with exits every kilometer or so. Plus 4 express lanes with exists every five kilometers or so. Then there are 4 collector and 4 express lanes going the other direction. Overhead electronic signs will warn you if one set of lanes has an accident or stalled car so you can detour around it. stevember
i agree. and for the record, speed has never killed anybody. people have done like mach 2 or 3, and they are fine. it is bad drivers. 586109710 The beat driver can't avoid a kid at 60............... 1WayJonny
Speed kills, the slow kind.A lot of people nearly fall asleep when they're following a ridiculously low speed limit. On highways around here the limit is 90km/h, which is retarded. No wonder people fall asleep. Its more dangerous to follow the speed limit than to go faster. Going faster makes people pay more attention to their driving. I agree with nemo, part of being a good driver is analyzing the road conditions. I constantly see people speeding when its raining at night, good job putting yourself in danger. People are not knowledgeable enough to decide when they should go fast, and how fast they should go. There are times where it is safe to go 200km/h sustained in a 90km/h highway, you just have to know when its appropriate and how your car will react. There are speeds that might be safe in certain cars designed to go fast, but not all cars are. It seems like people can't understand that. 586109675 Indeed But Hey the roads sucks because of the drivers who dont care to drive (besides real accidents) think about it not everyone plays for the NBA because that would be havoc of a game and horrible to watch cause it just dosent work, driving is a skill... period. Now look at that way and compare to everybody driving. almost everybody has to drive to live a full life now a days. Including the ones who suck!!!! These drivers make every passing car go around them because they are under the speed limit, because they are A) Scared or B) Not paying attention... I'd say the 401 around the airport is wider. around where I went to school (u waterloo) there was hwy 87, 78, 7, 8, all combinations of nse&w, in one part they all merge and go one way, then branch off...impossible to find your way the first few times you drive there. 586110124 They made it slightly better. Now the 87 merges into the 8 with an overpass. Still confusing, but way better for traffic. BTW, what program are you in? Anywho, speed limits are useless. Well, on the freeway they are. If you're driving the same speed as everyone else, stick to the first (or second) lane. Only use the others if you're passing. Now, if you're always passing everyone, then by all means stay in the last lane. :ninja:

gdodson
Speed limits are definatley needed on freeways, how the hell is someone supposed to merge when someone else comes up behind them at 120+ mph? Not only that, but the speed range of cars is huge, not everyone can safely drive a semi at 100mph compared to some car going 150 past them. Although I agree with speed not usually being a factor compared to how terrible drivers are.
