Speed Limits May Not Be Saving Lives

Recommended Posts

I think that the speed limit is actually the reason why some accidents occur....when there are drivers who actually do obey the speed limit are going slow, and somebody not obeying the speed limit comes up and smashes into them becuase tgheyre goin slow ...which would be the cause of the accident. So if everyone just gassed it all the time, there would be less accidents because of speed difference...

depending on the mood im in i drive anywhere from 5-15 mph over the speed limit on streets. freeways are different. ill drive anywhere from 5-30 mph depending on weather conditions and performance of the car. when i had my corvette going through traffic was a breeze at a higher speed. now that im driving an suv (temporarily) i know that the car cant manuver like my previous car so i have to take that into consideration when driving.

point is that, obviously, speed doesnt kill. morons who dont know how to control their car and respond to traffic situations properly cause accidents. ive been in two accidents involving another automobile, one was my fault and the second wasnt. none of the accidents involved speeding, but how to respond to traffic and weather.

you might bring up racing too. well again, its people who dont know how to handle their cars who cause most of the accidents. if you have more than 350hp and you dont know how to handle a rwd car, you dont need to be driving. if you have a ricer and you think you are paul walker in the fast and the furious, you dont need to be driving.

edit:

they will never reduce the speed limit because, in all honesty, it keeps the soccer driving moms in a range where they wont kill themselves or someone else. another reason why they wont remove a speed limit is that its a good revenue for the city. a lot of the times they will increase the speed limit for a couple of months and then all of a sudden they will lower it again. that is a good way for the cops to catch a lot of people speeding (also using speed traps) because people are use to driving 45mph and then all of a sudden its back down to 35 mph on a street they normally travel on. more tickets = more revenue for the city.

It costs too much (gas) money to be going ~90-100mph all of the time.

Going fast requires you to be in a high gear. Higher gears are good for fuel consumption.

Going 80km/h in third gear would be inefficient compared to going 80km/h in fourth gear.

Going 160hm/h in fifth gear would, however, still be inefficient compared to going 80hm/h in third gear. You need a lot of gas to deal with friction and air resistance at those speeds.

The difference in fuel economy between 65mph and 90mph in 6th gear isn't all that substantial in my car. Of course you'll use more gas per unit of time, but you'll also get there faster. If you have an SUV then you shouldn't be driving that fast in the first place. And if you have an older/less safe/less efficient/poorly maintained car the same applies.

But if you drive responsibly a reasonably new and well-maintained car, you should be fine - both in terms of safety and efficiency.
