Mayor calms suicidal man at city hall

Mayor David Miller helped calm an armed man who was threatening to kill himself.

The man had been shouting outside Miller's second-floor city hall office yesterday and was straddling the railing overlooking the main-floor rotunda while holding a small knife to his throat, the mayor's office said yesterday.

"Mayor Miller spoke with the man and coaxed him off the railing. He also convinced him to relinquish the knife," said a statement from Miller's office.

The mayor was still talking to the man when police arrived and took the man to hospital for assessment, said Miller spokesman Patchen Barss.

No charges were laid in the incident.

"The experience gave me some sense of what our front-line EMS (emergency medical services) and mental-health workers face everyday," Miller said in the statement.

"I am overwhelmingly relieved that this man is safe, and that he is now being cared for.

"I would like to thank the Toronto Police Service for their speed, professionalism and compassion."

And this is what he said, "Good job, you have everyone fooled. Now as we discussed before, $10,000 for you after we get out of here".

Good job for the mayor. It would be hard for me to calm anyone berserk and you'll definitely need alot of charisma to stop a man from killing himself...
