Lindows + source code + ORIGINAL VISUAL ELEMENTS THAT DON'T COPY WINDOWS + $50 off coupon = cool.

Until then...why waste your time, money, and ego?

Moved from Gen. Discussion to Software Discussion & Assistance forum.

EDIT:

I agree, I though Linux only charged for documentation

Linux IS NOT an OS. It's just the kernel. Linux itself is completely free and can be distribute/modify.

I don't hate it man. IMHO...there's just no place for a Linux/Windows hybrid. They both have their particular functions and any integeration of the 2 would just mean trouble.

i have tried Lindows SPX and i wasn't disappointed in the stability of the os but the only thing made me change back was it didn't support my ATI Radeon 8500!, other then that i was running MS apps at the stability of Linux..i mean it was alot more faster and my machine didn't lock up alot...i think it's a cool os but they need more support on new ATI Radeon Cards!

the thing to keep in mind is the purpose of their lindows project. to bring a stable, easy, simple OS to the market. windows can be very overbearing on new users (aka - -> people who buy computers at wal*mart). let alone, pushing linux (a natively non-workstation OS). Software installation in linux can be a big bloody pain even for people who know what they're doing..

lindows provides a central place to download/install software very easily. - - > click a button. thats it, and thats what the new users need.

I fully support support the idea of such an O/S man. But let's face the facts. Microsoft has almost 90% of the market in it's grasp and the other 10% is shared up among the others. If the Lindows team ever hope to see their product take off they'll definitely need to produce a very stable O/S with support for the majority of hardware and software out there. Sure Lindows may provide an easy method of downloading software but how will you enjoy your software when half of your hardware isn't recognized by the O/S or vice versa? Lindows needs more development before it can be put on the market.

Edit/ And at $99 bucks a disc? I think they were saying windows instead of Lindows when they priced their new-to-the-market-software.

They do. You just can't download Aqua. But you can download their BSD-derived core...I think it's called Darwin, but it's late, I don't remember exactly, but I do know that I was going to download it, but it didn't do something that I needed it to. Or something. Like I said, I'm tired. But irreguardless, Linux is open source software. It's *supposed* to include the source code, or at a minimum make it available for download. Lindows doesn't do that.

lindows is just another linux distro with an enhanced version of wine.

so there's no need for lindows since you can download wine yourself for free: www.winehq.com

maybe their version runs more software, but

a) who needs that? there is for sure a program for linux which does the same

b) IF you are in need of it just go and download and compile it. yeah, compiling it isn't such a difficult thing, i just takes some time.

i kinda like the idea, but unless it runs really 100% of my win-soft it's useless for me, and i seriously doubt they will get 100% :s

didn't they annuonce just a few days ago that it won't run all programs?

Okay, I have tested lindows on several ocasions and this is my opinion on the matter::

Lindows : Debian Linux a very stripped down version at that. it has an aweful version of wine included. thats it. that is all lindows is! if you want a real OS get netBSD or OPENBSD and if you still want to run windows apps I suggest using either winehq or vmware .

any questions? ;-)
