Matt
Beijing devoted to weakening 'enemy' U.S., defector saysBy Bill Gertz THE WASHINGTON TIMES Published June 27, 2005 China's communist leaders view the United States as their main enemy and are working in Asia and around the world to undermine U.S. alliances, said a former Chinese diplomat. Chen Yonglin, until recently a senior political officer at the Chinese Consulate in Sydney, Australia, said in an interview that China also is engaged in large-scale intelligence-gathering activities in the United States that, in the past, netted large amounts of confidential U.S. government documents from agents. "The United States is considered by the Chinese Communist Party as the largest enemy, the major strategic rival," Mr. Chen told The Washington Times in a telephone interview from Australia, where he is in hiding after breaking with Beijing in May. All Chinese government officials are ordered to gather information about the United States, "no matter how trivial," he said. "The United States occupies a unique place in China's diplomacy," Mr. Chen said. A pro-democracy activist who took part in the 1989 demonstrations in Beijing's Tiananmen Square, Mr. Chen, 37, spent 10 years as a Foreign Ministry official. He said he defected and sought political asylum in Australia to highlight repression of the Chinese people by their government and the ruling Communist Party, as well as the repression of dissidents such as democracy activists and the Falun Gong spiritual group. "I know that China once got a heavy load of confidential documents from the United States and sent it back to China through the Cosco ship," Mr. Chen said, referring to the state-owned China Ocean Shipping Co. The information was "very useful" to China's military and related to "aircraft technology," he said. http://www.washtimes.com/functions/print.p...27-010217-7779r
Matt
to add to the story. Could GM, Microsoft End Up in Chinese Hands?William Pesek Jr. June 27 (Bloomberg) -- Executives at Unocal Corp. and Maytag Corp. are on the cutting edge of a trend that's sure to shake up corporate America as rarely before: China's desire for Western brand names. Lenovo Group Ltd.'s agreement in December to buy the personal computer business of International Business Machines Corp. for $1.25 billion was the first sign China is becoming rapidly more internationally acquisitive. Now, with CNOOC Ltd., China's third-largest oil company, going after Unocal and Haier Group, its largest appliance maker, bidding for Maytag, there's no mistaking China's strategy. And those here in Washington pushing China to let its currency rise should know they're making that pursuit easier for Asia's No. 2 economy. By acquiring household names, China wants to boost global sales and distribution capabilities. Because brands take time to build, it's logical for companies like Lenovo, CNOOC and Haier to look for quick entry points into the U.S. This is really phase two of China's mergers and acquisitions strategy. The first entailed locking up the foreign commodity resources -- mining companies, mostly -- China needs to feed its economic rise. Just about every company of this sort in Canada, Australia, Southeast Asia, Africa and elsewhere is a target. http://quote.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=1...d=azhHIld0A1VE#
mAcOdIn Veteran Posted June 27, 2005 Veteran Share Posted June 27, 2005 Lol, more like could China end up in Microsoft's hands? I really don't think we need to worry about MS getting bought out.

SaLiVa
Again, another one-sided, biased article on China as a superpower. I wonder if anyone here has even read about the Chinas side of the story.

Starcom826
It's biased because they are printing what a defector said? He defected for a reason. Maybe it just sounds biased because China really does regard the United States as an enemy, has its own ambitions, lies all the time, and loves threatening people, as it really does. Hupp
wow, yeah, people don't just defect for sh*ts and giggles, they defect for money or for safety/freedom. He seemed to choose safety and freedom. He has no reason to really lie, it doesn't help his cause any, it would only put his life in more jeopardy to say something like this. To those who don't think China regards the U.S as an enemy, you are ignorant. Something will eventually happen between the U.S and Canada but it may not be any actual fighting involved, more or less problem something along the lines of the Cuban Missle Crisis, and probably over Taiwan. etiwanda
After the massacre at Tiananmen Square in 1989, the Chinese Commnist Party used all their sources and powers(such as the media all controlled by them) to uglify the States, because they are so afraid of the "American style democracy" which is believed to ruin the one party rule in China. With the rapid development in economy and the collapse of communism in belief, the nationalism has become the major ideology. the CCP claims the America(the leader of free word) is the only obstacle of China. And in fact, its the only obstacle of the CCP, NOT CHINA. But the Chinese Communist Party is just using the nationalism to legitimate their rule.
