Woman Stopped In Airport With $46,950 Stuffed In Her Bra

(Boston -WABC, June 24, 2005) ? Before boarding a plane in Texas for a plastic surgery operation, Ileana Valdez apparently stuffed $46,950 in cash in her bra. Now she wants it back, and she's suing federal agency to get it.

Valdex, 26, told authorities she was heading to Texas for plastic surgery on her buttocks and breasts, but was stopped short when her cash was seized after a security check at a metal detector at Logan International Airport on Feb. 3.

"I don't know why she was carrying it in her bra," said Boston lawyer Tony V. Blaize, who filed the suit Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Boston.

Valdez claims that a male Drug Enforcement Administration agent seized the cash, claiming it was drug money, and told her she had a nice body and didn't need surgery.

Valdez says she earned the money by selling her Dorchester business and two parcels of property in Boston's Jamaica Plain section, and has no criminal record.

Anthony Pettigrew, a spokesman for the DEA in Boston, said federal asset forfeiture laws allow agents to seize suspected drug profits, but said he could not comment on the lawsuit.

i wonder why she didn't just save the money in bank and pay for surgery via credit card (assuming operation takes place within the states).

if she's boarding international flight, this is actually understandable. if you wire money from one country to another, you have to pay about $11 to wire $10. you lose ridiculous amount of money this way.

because then it's visible income... can't track cash.

Why doesn't her lawyer, the one filing the suit know why she had it? You'd think that would be the very first thing he WOULD find out. American law is crazy, really damn crazy.

All she would have to do is show a record of what she sold. I find this pretty fishy, but I think the DEA being allowed to seize suspected drug money is a joke too.

We need pics, btw!

I traveled with a large amount of cash.. from an area back to the states.. I just never claimed it or said anything.. it is a federal law saying you have to claim any amount over 10k USD .. so I can see where this may get interesting

You know, I've heard about women stuffing their bra before, but this is ridiculous :D

You stole my joke . Weird place to try and hide that much cash but to each his or her own.

Yeah that was too much cash to be handling like that for real. Now occasionally I will put money in my bra like 40 dollars if I am going to the club when I don't want to have a purse lingering around.
