Nja

Hi.

This is a boss key program I made over the past couple of weeks.

I've tested it, and found no problems with it, and it does everything it is supposed to do AFAIK, but if you do find problems please tell me.

Here is the readme:

Nja (pronounced En-Jah) allows you to, on the press of a key, hide (including from the taskbar and ctrl-alt-del applications list) any windows you specify. It would be commonly called a "Boss Key" program.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

DESIGN:

FAST, SMALL, LIGHT - Memory usage is under 5mb (usually 2-3mb), and Download size is only 500kb.

CONFIGURABLE - Nearly everything about Nja is configurable. From how it displays it's status, to what keys to use, all can be configured.

SIMPLE - Nja is designed so there are no useless parts of the program. Nja is certainly not bloatware. The only files are Nja.exe (the program), Configurator.exe (self-explanitory), config.cfg (config file, changable in notepad), and windows.cfg (configuration of which windows to hide), and of course readme.txt (what you are reading now).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

FEATURES:

HIDE KEY - When you press the hide key (whatever you chose in the Configurator, by default the tilde key), Nja will instantly hide the windows you have chosen. See below on how to choose these windows.

LOCK MODE - When you press the lock key (by default Alt and the tilde key), Nja will hide all specified open windows, and also stop any such windows from opening. For example, if you had MSN messenger configured to be hidden when you press the hide (by default tilde) key. Your boss comes in, you press the hide key. MSN dissappears. Then while he is watching, an MSN alert comes up "So-and-so says: Hi!", which you have to quickly tab down and hope your boss didn't see. Not so with the lock feature. Just press the lock key, and any windows which come up are automatically hidden. They are not exited though, so as soon as you press the lock key again (to unlock everything), the window is still there. Also, if you are leaving your PC for a long amount of time, you can lock it, so that no unwanted windows will be visible.

STATUS ICON - If enabled, Nja will display a small icon in the lower right corner of your screen, showing the current status of Nja - that is open, hidden, or locked.

PASSWORD - Nja can be configured to request a password either when unhiding windows, or unlocking (see above).

SCREENSAVER - If you want, Nja can turn on your screensaver whenever you press the hide key or the lock key. This can be useful if you are using the lock feature and want to hide the fact that all programs except your spreadsheet program (or whatever you specified) will be automatically hidden. In this case, if configured, Nja will run your screensaver as soon as you press the lock key, so nobody will notice.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

BASIC USAGE

First, move Nja to a folder where you will permenantly store it. This can be anywhere on your PC. Next, run the configurator (configurator.exe). See below for more information. Once this is done, you will want to run Nja to try it out. Double click Nja.exe, and play around with the features. If you want to exit Nja, this must be done from the Ctrl-Alt-Del processes list. In the future, I plan to add a small program which, when you run it, terminates Nja. You will probably want to add a shortcut to Nja to your startup list. To do this, just right-click on Nja.exe, then click Create Shortcut. Right click on the new shortcut and press cut. Then right click on the start button, and press explore. Navigate to the startup folder, then press paste. That's it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE CONFIGURATOR:

The configurator allows you to set up Nja as you want, and creates the configuration files. Most of the pages are self explanitory, however the programs page can be slightly confusing. Here's how it works:

Exclusive Mode - this checkbox allows you to choose which basic mode Nja runs in. In Exclusive Mode, all the windows you add to the "windows list", will be *excluded* when you press the hide key. That means all windows will be hidden, except those in this list. If you're not in Exclusive Mode, Nja will leave all windows open, and only hide the windows which are in the list.

The Window list - this is the listbox on the lower right, captioned "Applications". Any windows whose titles contain any of the items in this list will be hidden/not hidden depending on whether Exclusive Mode is enabled (see above).

For example if you added "Firefox" to the list, and had Exclusive Mode disabled. When you press the hide key, Nja will hide any programs whose title contains the text "Firefox". This would include the Firefox web browser (title "Firefox - Google.com"), (if you had it open) Firefox's help window ("Firefox Documentation"), and even windows explorer if you were browsing the firefox folder ("Windows Explorer - C:\Programs\Firefox"). On the other hand, if you had Exclusive Mode enabled, Nja will hide all windows except those with "Firefox" in the title.

The list on the left simply shows which programs you have running and allows you to add them to the list. Note, when you press add, Nja only adds the first word of the program's title to the list. This is not a bug. This is to stop you from accidently adding a window such as "Paint - xxx.jpg" (which would mean Nja would only hide paint when the file xxx.jpg is open), instead of "Paint" (which would hide paint no matter what file is open). If you need more than one word, just type it in the edit box.

Window titles are not case sensitive.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope this has covered all the features of Nja, and how to use them, and I hope there isn't any bugs in the program. If you have any problems or questions, feel free to E-mail me at jadesp@gmail.com, or better, make a post in the Neowin thread for the program. You should get a reply to your email within a few days (or hours), and to a post on the program's Neowin thread even faster.

Does the Hide command suppresses alert sounds that MSN makes or even Mute the system volume will do. If not, I request this feature.

Indeed. Tabbing down multiple pop-up ads, and stopping them from coming up, was one one of the reasons I made it in the first place :shfity:

Oh, and I don't look at pr0n at all

OK, I done the mute feature. There's some minor and generally unnoticeable bugs, but it does it's job. I'll PM TimRogers with the new download for him to upload.
