lindows - the new operating system

Question

Decided to try the system as the SPX release has been on the usenet server I use for ages and it only has a 41 day retention so time was running out, played with it a bit yesterday and managed to get IE (sort of) working, and MS Office 2000 worked but the system was far slower than XP, even when not emulating windows, almost anything else half worked but never looked good or operated quickly. Didn't even look at the Click-and-run service as I think you had to pay for this (to get GPL'ed software and a few 'in house' developments like a linux compatable AOL (whoooo), and a crappy looking office suite).

It looked ugly, was slow and has already been permenantly removed from my system, a complete waste of time, won't even try the full release, as there's no reason I'de want to replace XP with this, and another wasted cd can now find it's way to the rubbish dump.

IMO the best linux distro is SuSE (Mandrake too much beta stuff, Redhat too many configs to edit, compiled linux and debian - how the hell do you install these in any reasonable time without reading 200 howtos?) but it's still not half as good as windows on the desktop (IMO) and I won't install linux until the apps are at least as good and quick as windows ones, and you don't need to spend 10 mins downloading dependencies just to use any new app.

here's the reply i got from lindows.com regarding the equation (linux + wine - source code + fee = lindows)

The equation should look more like

Linux + a whole bunch of stuff - difficulty to use + wine + improvements on wine + even more cool stuff = LindowsOS (and yes, it costs money). LindowsOS is a Debian distribution of Linux, and the source code IS released (to those people who get the binary). It costs money because it is worth it, and Lindows.com paid a lot of money into making it a great OS with cool features. It uses a modified KDE 3.0 as the GUI and can use the different skins and themes that KDE has to offer. You would want to make the switch if you are tired of long serial numbers, difficult activation codes, and having to buy seperate licenses for every computer you own. If you are tired of having to shell out lots of money for every application you want, LindowsOS features the Click-N-Run warehouse, where you will have unlimited access to the 1300+ (and growing) products that are completely free to Lindows.com Insiders.
