Sound Upgrade - Your thoughts

Recommended Posts

Ive been pondering this for sometime now but never have gotten around to getting an answer.

Heres My Setup

My PC is connected to my Stereo, my stereo has surround sound speakers and is reasonably new. I also have purchased and attached at active subwoofer to it.

Now the soundcard in my PC is some 32bit soundcard that might actually be attached to the motherboard, Im, not quite sure eitherway the point is its only a 32bit card.

1. Will upgrading the card to even a SB Live 5.1 Dexule Edition sound card improve my audio experience?

2. Also rather then posting a sepate thread in the Media room,

Im thinking of buying a digital reciever, which has built in DTS and Cinema Sound extensions

Anyone else know exactly what other benefits a digital reciever has, and will it be a noticable increase in audio quality, with my pc sounds and my DVD watching etc?

Thanks in advance

I highly recommend the SB Audigy. I make good use of mine.

It has a lower noise ratio than Live! and that firewire port is really usefull. I picked up an external firewire HD enclosure for $65 and stuck a Maxtor 160GB HD in it. Its makes a great portable backup/MP3 drive.

The show I went to last weekend had Audigy OEM's for $62

Well as a follow up just thought I would let you know

point number #2 is out the window digital recievers and hi fi systems dont go together

and back to point 1

I brought the SB Live 5.1 SE

1. the audigy was $110 more expensive

2. I never thought firewire anything special till about 10 mins ago

but ahwell, the sound seems a but cripser and I seem to get louder sound as such, in that say setting 40 on my stereo now seems to be equivilent to the old cards setting 25

(On the stereo lower the setting louder the music)

the software doest notice my rear surround speakers but ahwell, I guess that what a reciever would come in handy for, or a proper surround packe for a PC but anyhow seems alot better.

Thanks for the tips anyway guys. Now I know what firewire does in part anyhow.
