As Errol Rose made preparations on Monday to bury his 15-year-old son, Christopher, who was killed last week in Brooklyn during a fight over an iPod, he received a telephone call from a stranger. The man spoke in tones that the grieving father said had momentarily quieted his anguish.

The stranger, Rose soon learned, was Steve Jobs, chief executive of Apple Computer, the company that makes the iPod.

"I didn't know who he was," Rose said yesterday. "He called me on my cellphone, at 4 maybe. Or maybe it was 5." Rose said he had stopped noticing the passage of time since his son was killed.

The men spoke for a few minutes.

Calling him by his first name, Jobs asked how Rose was doing, he said, and conveyed his sympathies. "He told me that he understood my pain," Rose said. "He told me if there is anything--anything--anything he could do, to not be afraid to call him. It really lightened me a bit."

That is awesome of him. I mean it isn't like he threw iPods at the family he actually took the time to call him.

wonder if the case was reversed and it all happened over a Microsoft Product??? Ok Ok, I am bad but just a thought...what would have been MS's reaction...???

It's a good thing he didn't send an iPod personalized with:

I always have wondered how news like this gets found out. I mean, did the father go to a reporter and say "Hey, Steve Jobs called me, he's a real nice guy" or did Apple "leak" the story or what? I mean, it sounds all nice and sincere and everything, but this is a CEO of a company we are talking about.

Wow... I mean, really, wow. Nobody would expect this from any CEO. Jobs is a really nice guy. I respect him even more now.

That was nice of Steve Jobs to do that, nice to see CEO's like that. (Y)

Putting a human element to this tragedy is nice, this world is becoming too f*cked up with violence and attitude.

As nice of a gesture this is, one must question whether he's trying to save Apple's tail-end...

Over what? No-one has blamed Apple for anything, they didn't cause his death, they're in no danger. No one is not going to buy an ipod over this, Apple wasn't going to get sued for wrongful death or anything, Apple was going to lose nothing.

Now was this heartfelt or a PR stunt, I dunno, but what the heck does it matter? I guess if one had to choose between a society that showed fake concern for each other or a society that showed real no concern for each other the society with the fake concern would be better.

I say it was a cool move.

Edit: Anyways whether it was a PR move or not I'd like to think anyone, including Jobs, would be disgusted to learn that someone was killed over a portable music player, so no matter the motive behind the call I'm sure the message was sincere.

If I could afford a mac, I'd go buy one right now. Steve-o is an all around good guy.

It is sickening to think that someone could lose their life over a brand name product, our world is really starting to fall apart.
